Eagles camp sparkles as Abbey George scores
Friday, January 09, 2004
THE lull in the Super Eagles camp is gradually giving way to stiffer challenges as the D-day for naming of the 22 players gets closer.
With the arrival of Ifeanyi Udeze who was excluded by coach Christian Chukwu from training until he undergoes and passes the compulsory physical training, the camp is bubbling with actions.
George Abbey was just one of those who sparked up the atmosphere in camp with a superb goal that elicited smiles from people’s faces. He had joined attack from the defence and in a lightening speed got a through ball which he thundered in and caught goalkeeper Rotimi Sunday napping.
The goal was in a class of its own and even players acknowledged the beauty by clapping for its executor, Abbey George, the Macclesfield defensive ace. Members of the team’s technical crew were not left out in appreciating the beauty of the goal. Chukwu nodded, while Eguavoen who stood in as referee pumped his hands into the air.
If Abbey George scored a cracker of a goal yesterday, Rangers’ Oge Ileagu, may turn out to be the revelation of the camp as he has brought a new vista of hope to the team. Ekene Ezenwa of Enyimba has made even scouts ask a dozen times who he was, his club and questions which indicated that he was gradually playing himself into the team. The Enyimba player, no doubt was a thorn in the flesh of defenders. While he was running ring round the opposing defender, Pius Ikedia sparkled with his fast runs and dribbles that confused the defenders. He also scored a goal for his efforts. Aliu Mohammed is not left out from the fighters in camp as it dawns on them that the day of reckoning is getting nearer.
