Shola Ameobi leaves Newcastle as contract ends.
http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/fo ... ed-7166645
Shola Ameobi has left Newcastle United after 14 years of service.
The club confirmed the long-serving striker will be leaving the Magpies after the expiration of his contract, and that Luuk de Jong and Loic Remy have also left the club.
The Chronicle understands that neither Remy or de Jong will be back, with the club having abandoned attempts to re-sign the French striker after he made it clear he did not want to come back to St James’ Park.
But the headline exit from Newcastle is that of Ameobi, who played 397 games and scored 79 goals – including a slew of strikes in derby games with Sunderland
He had an often chequered relationship with Toon supporters but he was appreciated by successive managers and Alan Pardew had originally pressed for him to be handed a coaching role at the club and a one-year contract extension.
There was no agreement to be brokered, however, and Ameobi will leave for the World Cup with Nigeria a free agent.
Boss Alan Pardew told the club’s official website: “I would like to thank each of these players for the effort, attitude and application they have put in while at the Club.
“However, I have to make a special mention of Shola Ameobi, who has been an incredible servant to Newcastle United.
“Such loyalty and commitment in the modern game is rare and Shola was not just a great player on the pitch but a key figure off it too.
“He is a leader of men, a great role model for our younger players and I wish him well for the remainder of his career.”
Ameobi confirmed that it was a mutual decision for him to leave. There is interest from Hull City in the striker, who will make a decision on his future after the World Cup.
He said: “Following discussions with Newcastle United, both parties felt it was the right time for us to part company.
“I’ve been at Newcastle United all my career and I’ve enjoyed every moment and always worn the famous shirt with pride. I am now looking forward to starting a new chapter in my career.
“I would like to place on record a big thank you to everyone at Newcastle United. I wish the Club great success in the future and I’m sure with the team and management they have, Newcastle United will go from strength to strength.
“Finally, a big thank you to the supporters who have always been fantastic.
“I hope to come back to Newcastle United one day in some capacity to help repay some of the faith and loyalty that everybody connected to the Club has shown me during my time here.”
The club have also allowed Michael Richardson, Steven Logan, Brandon Miele and Jonathan Mitchell to leave.

Regardless of what the fans (toons or Niger) think of Amoebi's playing skills, there is consistent positive report on his character. Shola has won the most important trophy. Congrats!.AreaDaddy wrote:http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/fo ... ed-7166645

Buhari, whose two terms thankfully ground to a constitutional halt in May. (One thing both democracies have going for them is that their leaders, however bad, have only two terms to swing the wrecking ball.) Under Buhari, growth per head also plunged to 0. An economic agenda drawn from the dusty pages of a 1970s protectionist handbook failed to do the trick. Despite Buhari’s promise to tame terrorism and criminality, violence flourished. Despite his reputation for probity, corruption swirled. FT

That is wicked. Why not wait till after the world cup to release him. Anyway, I blame shola, for staying too damn long at that club.
