Waldrum & Lauren Gregg Interviews

Post by txj »

Listened to an interview he just granted on the Coaching Academy radio show with Glen Cook, via his ACC Network Soccer program.

Had listened to Lauren Gregg on the same show about a week ago...

1. Lauren had said she was blocked from joining Waldrum at the WC by the NFF as retaliation.
2. She then had to do her primary job, remotely.
3. Job was opposition scouting and developing the game model. She would then get on zoom with Waldrum to discuss the details, etc.
4. Said she also kept in touch with the players via team text messages...

Waldrum on the other had dwelled heavily on his approach to the tournament.

1. Said they effectively trained for 10 days for the WC; playing a test game against a local side.
2. Had a meeting with players only and resolved to leave the off-field issues to FIFPRO and focus entirely on football.

On the matches, he stated as follows:

a. the game model was based largely on the low block and the counter. Disciplined positioning in the defensive area and choosing the right moments to break out..
Most of the work was on their defensive organization.

b. vs Canada the block was supposed to be a little higher; was supposed to start from the upper part of the center circle, but the girls kept dropping back and back and it became quite difficult to execute the model properly.

c. Result gave the team confidence going into the Australia game and team executed properly; especially pointed to the work on ball recovery and then the attacking transition.

d. Said the England game was the culmination of all their work.

- They tweaked the model to press a little higher.
- Said tactic caught England by surprise; that one of his ex players in the England camp (Rachel Daly, Houston Dash) confessed that they had trained all week for the Nigerian low block only to be caught unawares by the high press...
Form is temporary; Class is Permanent!
Liverpool, European Champions 2005.

We watched this very boring video, 500 times, of Sacchi doing defensive drills, using sticks and without the ball, with Maldini, Baresi and Albertini. We used to think before then that if the other players are better, you have to lose. After that we learned anything is possible – you can beat better teams by using tactics." Jurgen Klopp

One thing about the coach his tactics were pretty effective. However the goal scoring options needs further work. I was very impressed . I do not rate PKs , it's based on pure football luck

Big porkey but we’re you ever objective when you spent the entire time bashing the players and women football or did you think we forgot ?

"It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If the--if he--if 'is' means is and never has been, that is not--that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement....Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no. And it would have been completely true."

I owe the guy an apology. His team looked professional and well-coached in terms of tactics. I would have loved them to be better at ball retention and passing. But on strategy and tactics, he had it spot on. Difficult to go to a tournament and go undefeated. He accomplished that with horrendous preparation and sabotage by the NFF.

It is unfortunate that we have to keep dealing with a grossly inept NFF.

The problem with corruption and fraud is that the sabotage is INTENTIONAL. They request funds to cover games all the way to the finals. They are praying and hoping along with doing their own part to make it difficult for the team to go far enough so as not to eat into the money they are expecting to share.

I think based on his showing, he should be retained. But I doubt they will do that.

He is bad for business.

I hope they pay him his outstanding arrears and the promised bonuses.

AS A MATTER OF INTEREST...

...Deborah Abiodun is listed in the roster of the Univ of Pittsburgh women's soccer as a freshman MF wearing #8. Good luck to her professionally and academically.
