Victor Boniface is in the forefront of winning the next African best player
Victor Boniface and Bayern Leverkusen won the Bundesliga in great style, staying unbeaten and setting a world record.
They will most likely win the Europa league and the German cup.
Victor Boniface is Bayern Leverkusen's top scorer even after staying out injured for 3 months.
He won the rookie German Bundesliga best young player award. He's in the Bundesliga team of the season. The only other African player that comes close to Boniface for the African best award, is Ademola Lookman and that's if he wins the Europa league.
I dare say the award should go to Victor Boniface

I agree. I think if he wins one more trophy no arguments. Lookman is the only other possibility: three finals and decisive goals for his team. I hope they don't split votes. They are the top 2. I keep hearing Kudus but really compared to this two?

...it's a shame these guys win championships at their clubs but when they come SE things go south. Why? Poor management, poor administration? Osimhen last time, now Boniface.
Re: Victor Boniface is in the forefront of winning the next African best player
but he does not play in the EPL or La Liga

EPL does not improve a player. EPL just pads up the players pocket with money

My view is that these victories should not be major consideration for AFOY. The biggest question should be what you do in an African shirt. Right now, Lookman should be ahead of Boniface given the AFCON.
CAF should never undermine its own competitions by prioritizing what players do in other competitions.
The difficulties of statistical thinking describes a puzzling limitation of our mind: our excessive confidence in what we believe we know, and our apparent inability to acknowledge the full extent of our ignorance and the uncertainty of the world we live in. Striker A wins the Champions League, the Premier League, and finishes the season with the Golden Boot. His country finishes AFCoN in 4th place.Enugu II wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 9:19 amMy view is that these victories should not be major consideration for AFOY. Striker B plays for a team who are relegated, he scores 5 goals all season, but his country wins AFCoN in which he played a big part.

...hasn't that been their criteria for all the past APOY winners lately, why stop now? It's a damn shame we Africans look outside for everything including players to play for us, and or coaches to coach our teams, thereby rendering our home based players inconsequential.Enugu II wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 9:19 amMy view is that these victories should not be major consideration for AFOY. Who should win the African Footballer of the Year?
An African footballer is an African footballer wherever he plays.
He carries his identity and African hopes regardless.
It’s not as if we are talking about Saka, Mbappe or Vierra here.
By Prof’s criteria, George Weah and Kanu Nwankwo would and should never have won the APOY title.

Kanu won Olympic gold. Weah Opong was dominant in African footie, years before going to Europe.

Ah, thanks.
Its great to see these players remembering their early coaches.

Olympic gold is great and that gold was one of my greatest moments as a football fan. But it’s still an age-limited competition no matter what our sentiments tell us.
Most here would rate an AFCON title, not to talk of a World Cup above it.
As for Weah, I think your imagination is in overdrive. Which African dominance, where and when are you attributing to Weah?
Having said all that, my point is that both players were still absolutely deserving of their titles - just in case anyone is getting it twisted.

Re: Victor Boniface is in the forefront of winning the next African best player
There isn't any clear frontrunner. Boniface, Lookman, Adringa, Haller, Kudus, Salah who knows. If Atalanta wins it should definetly go to Lookman as he played well in the AFCON.
Re: Victor Boniface is in the forefront of winning the next African best player
Asides Boniface and possibly Lookman, who among the people you listed won any trophy this season?
Boniface just won the Bundesliga.
Boniface is the highest goal scorer for the team that won the Bundesliga.(I dare say he'd have scored more if he wasn't out for 3 months).
Boniface will definitely win the German cup.
Boniface is most likely to win the Europa league.
Boniface won the best rookie award this season.

Re: Victor Boniface is in the forefront of winning the next African best player
It really depends on how much weight CAF wants to put on the AFCON. Like some have said, they really should be factoring in the performance in their own premier tournament. They should not base it on Europe alone. Obviously I am fine with Boniface winning it, but what message does that send?naijaguy wrote: ↑Wed May 22, 2024 8:21 amAsides Boniface and possibly Lookman, who among the people you listed won any trophy this season?

I think there's still time. Let's see how these 2 WCQs unfold and the first few months of next season. I think the award is in December.
Time still dey.
Boniface has done diddly squat for the SE and he's on the periphery for Leverkusen these days as they ease him back from injury. I doubt he starts today.
