Tobi17 wrote: Thu May 11, 2023 6:27 pm Mali plays some really beautiful football, how do these French-speaking African countries play very neat and technical football? even their senior national teams are the same...
Because they learned from the French? The British taught us absolutely nothing. Their kick-and-follow football has won how many World Cups? one?
Honestly I was leaning towards that theory, the brand of football most top African countries play today are products of colonial influence...the Anglophone nations in Africa learned the kick and rush football perfected by the English, I believe only Ghana is an exception cause they adopted some Brazilian style and flair into their football at the evolving stage. Then we have the francophone countries like Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and a few others that play beautiful one-touch footie, probably learned from the superb French academies in their countries.
I’m not sure this theory holds water.
- None of our national footballers today were alive during colonial times.
- I doubt even their parents were.
- Nigeria has never had British coaches in charge of our national team or even club sides.
- In fact we’ve had more French-leaning coaches than English/British.
- The EPL is a multinational mix of players.
- None of their British coaches are in charge of the EPL’s top teams.
- Many of France’s legendary players came of age in the Premiership: Henry, Cantona, Desailly, Ginola, Pires, Anelka, Lloris, Makelele, Viera…the list is endless.

So this una theory, interesting as it sounds, does not really stand up to scrutiny.
Patapata you can argue we watch too much EPL, or that many of our top players play in the EPL. But as I’ve said, nor be only us.
Just my take…

Liverpool, European Champions 2005.

We watched this very boring video, 500 times, of Sacchi doing defensive drills, using sticks and without the ball, with Maldini, Baresi and Albertini. We used to think before then that if the other players are better, you have to lose. After that we learned anything is possible – you can beat better teams by using tactics." Jurgen Klopp

Too much caressing of the ball instead of passing to open teammates.
When is this over dwelling on the ball be coached out of our players?

It's a player problem, not a coaching problem. With this team at least. It is obvious watching the team that Ugbade wants a quick passing game. It is how 90% of our chances are created. Some players are just making terrible decisions or misplaying passes.
