Fanny Amun Arrested Over Coup Scare

Fanny Amun, Ahmedu arrested over security breach

By Ejiro Femi-Babafemi

Reporter, Lagos

Security operatives discreetly spread their net to the sports arena at the weekend in their quest to swoop on those alleged to be implicated in the security breach of last month. They picked up a second sports personality in one week.

It continued a search operation that has seen the arrest of several military and civilian personalities, particularly near the top end of the social strata.

Just as the excitement of a football fare reached its climax at the National Stadium, Lagos men suspected to be from the State Security Service (SSS) placed their hands on the shoulder of Fanny Amun and whisked him away in a hush – unknown to several spectators.

Amun, former Super Eagles Coach, is the Acting Head of the Technical Department of the Nigeria Football Association.

He was deprived of his freedom most likely for his perceived relationship with Hamza AI-Mustapha, former chief security officer (CSO) to late head of state Sani Abacha.

Also reportedly quizzed last week for the same reason is Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) board member and Chairman of its youth development committee, Sam Ahmedu, a Colonel in the Army. He is the proprietor of Dodan Warriors.

A reliable source said Amun’s arrest may be over the security breach that has linked several of the socially well-connected, notable among them Mustapha.

Security operatives arrived the stadium in a white metallic Toyota Hiace bus – shortly before the LG third place match between Libya and Jordan and the final between Nigeria and Senegal – and waited till after the final whistle before closing in on their quarry.

A witness to the brief mute drama said the operatives allowed him to carry out his official duties before declaring their intentions. When he was done with his job for the day, they informed him that his attention was required at their Shangisha, Lagos office to answer questions linking him with Mustapha.

Speechless for a while before regaining composure, Amun followed them but not without informing Nigeria Football Association (NFA) Secretary General, Taiwo Ogunjobi, who was still at the stadium.

Ogunjobi saw it as a duty to protect his colleague and volunteered to accompany him in his official car but, to his shock, was advised “in his own interest” not to do so, as the matter was beyond NFA.

“He was told that the matter was a security affair, not a sports issue and, therefore, should back out if he cherishes his life,” the source said.

Amun’s detention did not come as a surprise to most of his colleagues who confirmed that he often boasts of his relationship with Mustapha “during the good old days.”

Ahmedu has been released, but Amun is still cooling his heels at Shangisha.

Well, Amu, had better watch his FANNY and not drop the soap :P :P

I am not surprised at all and he has always in the past boast about his connections to Mustapha and his dealings with him. Hmmm this report seems to correspond with what happenend behind scenes in France'98 with Amun and Co derailing things left and right... We shall see how this turns out.

His name probably came up during one of those SSS intensive interrogations naija style...

If for anything, NEMESIS has a way of paying people. I will never forget the hatred this Amun human being had against Sunday Oliseh for insisiting Papa Oni must not allow Sunday Oliseh in the World Cup squad of 2002, despite him (Amun) claiming to have a sort of family relationship to Sunday Oliseh.

FM,

I am not surprised by the pickup by SSS agents and as much i always doubt news stories from news reporters back home what this writer says is true. Fanny Amun are part and many reasons why our game from top to bottom has decayed to a point of no return. He and others were part of the whole nonsense that took place behind the scenes just before France'98. A complete saboteur and they way they all tried to sabotage our efforts just before France'98. No bad deed goes unpunished.

This is what happens to people who get things based on deceit, evil and corrupt ways this are the end results.

I don't know what will happen but in previous coup plots anyone caught habouring, helping, aiding dissidents and coup plotters it is automatic treason... Looking forward to seeing what happens with his pickup.
