Tunisia 2004: Etafia Swells Eagles to 11 in Faro Camp

As Senegal keeps Kalu, Opabunmi out
By Tunde Sulaiman

----------THISDAY SPORTS TODAY---------------------------------------

Super Eagles players have began to arrive in trickles into the Faro camp ahead of next month's Nations Cup finals, with goalkeeper Greg Etafia joining yesterday to bring the total number in camp to 11.

Osase Odewenge and Joseph Onakhire, who were to have joined on Monday night, failed to show up, although Onakhire did phone in to plead for more time saying that he was tired after playing on Sunday and thus missed his flight.

Both are, however, expected to arrive today, while former Super Eagles defence strongman Taribo West was due in Faro last night from his base in Belgrade, Bulgaria.

Nine players flew out with Coach Christian Chukwu over the weekend to set up camp in Faro while defender Abbey George joined them on Monday.

THISDAYSports reliably learnt that Chukwu put the team through two rigorous training sessions yesterday at the well secluded training facility while the weather is said to be the same with what they are likely to meet in Tunisia.

Nigeria Football Association (NFA) spokesman Sam Kaalu told us that the players were all in high spirits and expected to have more players in by this weekend.

Meanwhile, the FA is toying with the idea of sending the U-23 to Ivory Coast ahead of next month's crucial Athens 2004 tie with Senegal.

The team left Bauchi yesterday for Abuja where they will remain pending a final decision by the Glass House. In the wake of their 1-1 draw with Tunisia Saturday, Dream Team III can not afford to lose in Dakar if they are to remain on course for another Olympic Games outing.

It was, however, reliably learnt that the availability of funds will ultimately determine if the team camps in Abidjan or not.

"We would really like to take them out of the country because they really need to concentrate on the task in hand. But money is our biggest problem," explained a FA source last night. The clash with Senegal is also the reason why Uche Kalu and Femi opabunmi, were prevented from flying to the Faro Camp of the Eagles. They are being kept behind to help the U-23 in Dakar.
