Globacom Has Changed the Face of Telecoms in Nigeria

There was no doubt that Nigerians were looking for who will bell the cat._ They had embraced the GSM operators with open hands, hoping to end decades¡ of being kept incommunicado. Soon they realized that their elation has been dampened. On the heel of their embrace came a series of complains. Drop calls. Incessant and unjustifiable billings. Per minute billings instead of per second billing. The complains were legion.

The operators¡ reaction took away any hope still remaining for subscribers. They were asked to wait till 2007 to be able to be billed by the second. Reason? As a young network, they were not qualified for per second billing. But Globacom came with a bang. The company threaded where only lions dared. The first pro-people policy of the company was the introduction of_ per second billing system. It was the tempo of the moment. It was the people¡s heartbeat.

And what was the reaction of other networks? There was a blockade of the network for daring to tell Nigerians the truth and for daring to take a possibility outlook. The others__ insisted it was not their fault. It was the handiwork of inadequate capacity. All that is history_ now. While the refrain of inadequate capacity continued, the other networks went ahead to introduce in three months what was said to be impossible till 2007. This surely was an indication of_ the leading_ role Globacom has come to play in the Nigerian market.

As Globacom Landed

One question an observer of the telecom business will ask is, what are the indications that the second national operator has anything different from what others can offer Nigerians at the moment? The answer can be found in some of the things that Globacom has done before now and what it promises to do in the near future. One, the company has contracted two world acclaimed telecom vendors; Alcatel of France and Siemens of Germany. Alcatel for example is a world leader in the telecom infrastructure business. In Africa, it has an intimidating credential. It has references in 47 countries out of 52, with 12 million fixed lines over the continent, controlling over 40% market share in that area. Also, it has 12.5 million lines capacity in the mobile with 42 operators over 38 countries. This gives it 28 percent of the African market and makes it the leader in this sector. It has also deployed Domestic Satellite Ground Networks in 19 countries and more than 1600 microwave relays over the continent In the satellite domain, it deployed AfriStar, Nilesat, EuropeStar and is involved in IntelSat and EutelSat

Globacom has signed a contract with this world giant to supply a turnkey mobile and fixed telecommunication network in the Southern part of Nigeria. The network will enable Globacom to offer the best combination of advanced fixed and mobile voice and data services to over two million subscribers for domestic and international services.

Globacom, is also implementing a satellite backbone network as the most suitable and reliable way to interconnect the mobile switching centres. A connection to SAT3, the optical submarine network, will also be installed in order to carry international traffic. On its part, Siemens of Germany is deploying its over 150 years of telecom tradition and experience garnered from its presence in over 180 countries, applying all the synergies it garners from its presence in related industries. The company is comfortably the number three telecom infrastructure and terminals company in the world today with over 180 customers in more than 90 countries.

In the terminals market, Siemens today occupies the No.2 position in Europe and the No. 4 position in the world. In the cordless products, it occupies number 1 in world wide value, No. 1 in Europe in both value and volume. And in the wireless modules it is No. 1 in Europe and No. 2 in the world.

With these intimidating credentials, Siemens is poised to give the Nigerian subscriber what he/she has not seen in the mobile and fixed telecommunication sub-sector in this country and indeed in Africa. Very soon, over twenty cities_ in the North and its environs will begin to "glo with pride" in what will prove to be the fastest deployment of GSM infrastructure ever_ noticed in this part of the world. Particularly, the cities of Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Zaria, Jaji, Sokoto, Gombe. Katsina. Maiduguri, Dutse, Katangora, Yola and the tin city, Jos will soon glo with pride..

The Innovations, the World Class Services

Within the first six months of__ launch, Glo-mobile has been giving Nigerians a taste of the pudding.

The company has launched the clearest voice on phone in the country. For now, the company has made e-mail access very easy for its subscribers. This is in recognition of the fact that communication provides the greatest possibility for the self actualization of human beings. Soon, the subscriber will no longer need a computer and a service provider to get into the worldwide web. All one needs now is a Glo-mobile line. With this, you can receive and send e-mails anywhere in the world today. Through the Wireless Application Protocol soon to be introduced, the subscriber will have the opportunity to browse the net. These will only be made available to only Glo-subscribers. This used to be a story told in other lands. It is now told and practiced in Nigeria, live. The elation of the offering to Nigerians can only be gleaned into with the pump and the ecstasy with which Nigerians look forward to using Glo-lines.

But that is only recently. The company which many now call Glo-innovate entered the market with innovations. For example, while it was coming up with per second billing arrangement, it accompanied it with the friends and family which gives Nigerians the opportunity to keep in touch with their families at the least cost possible. It is the idea of a company which wants to keep the family unit together. And added to this is the opportunity of enjoying a contract rate without signing any.

Glo Magic Plus, a Product of Fun

Glo-Mobile, suddenly has turned the telephone to an instrument of fun, a security gadget, a mobile banking apparatus and an instrument of work, keeping one abreast of much needed information. The instrument called telephone can now be used to remote-control every apparatus in the house and the office

Globacom¡s focus has shifted from the convention which is voice to the development of value added services and other solutions. In a stress filled world, where people could be lonely even in the midst of a crowd, Glo-Mobile¡s latest, Magic Plus provides the much needed pep to the user¡s life. The subscriber could use this in many ways. He could access new and naughty jokes to amuse himself. He could also brighten some other persons¡ moments by sharing the jokes with them. He could even express his mood on his phone. He does this by simply downloading a logo or even a ring tone on his phone.

He could also decide to express his personality by jazzing up his phone, giving it a distinctive tone that will become an expression of his personality. It will be possible to hear the music of yester-years from the elderly who look back to the music of their youth with nostalgia. It is also possible for lovers of animals to demonstrate this through their unique ring tones. The youths through this medium have the opportunity to showcase their excitement of life with their special ring tones.

Glo Magic Plus is not just about entertainment. It is also about information. These pieces of information required extra efforts to access before now. Today, at the touch of your phone button, you are connected with flight schedules to all the major cities in Nigeria. One can also access international schedules on the Glo-phone. How does this help business? It no longer makes business sense to send a driver to either the airport, the airline or even to an agency just to make enquiries about flight schedules. It is no longer even useful to call. Glo-Mobile has the information at the subscriber¡s beck and call.

As our country continues to develop, it has also become important that visitors to this part of the world must be kept abreast of the temperatures of the different parts of the country via the Glo Weather Report.

And for lovers of fun, the weekend hotspots is of interest. After a hard week¡s work, people desire to unwind, yet they do not know where to go. Glo Mobile¡s Magic Plus gives the direction and the colour. Lovers of Horoscope can also find their desires met in this all purpose Magic Plus.

There is also something for the businessman who wants to know the latest rates in the currency market or view the Dutch Auction. While one aspect of the product may interest one group or the other, news and sports seem to appeal to all the segments. These include political, business and sports. Football is currently the opium of Nigerians. It is one event that makes nonsense of all of ethnicity and class. Glo Magic Plus has given it a pride of place going by the love of Nigerians for the sports. And so at the touch of the button, fixtures, results and top scorers of the Globacom League, English Premiership, UEFA Matches, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Dutch League are shown. The Chairman of Globacom, Dr. Mike Adenuga has promised that by the end of the year, Globacom would have made Five Million lines available to Nigerian subscribers in his effort to ensure that every part of the country is opened up for development. At that point, the world rural will mean something different from what it is today.
