Rivaldo signing takes another twist

Wednesday, June 02, 2004

THE Rivaldo signing saga took yet another twist on Monday when it was claimed the English agent who has been making all the major moves in Wanderers’ bid to sign the Brazilian legend has been “dropped” by the player.

For according to the Daily Record Celtic insist they are still fighting for his signature and revealed he has told them not to deal with the agent who claims he has already agreed to join Bolton.

This website revealed on Saturday the Parkhead club were more hopeful than ever of capturing the Brazilian superstar after inviting him to join Martin O’Neill’s squad for their summer tour of the States.

And Celtic have now rubbished the claims of English agent Peter Harrison who is desperately attempting to broker the deal to get Rivaldo to the Reebok Stadium.

Harrison insisted Rivaldo has given his word that he will sign for Sam Allardyce for a crack at the Premiership. But Celtic insist the former Barcelona and AC Milan playmaker has warned them not even to speak with Harrison as they attempt to thrash out a deal.

A club spokesman confirmed: “We have an official mandate signed by Rivaldo instructing us to deal with specifically-named agents based in Brazil and Italy who are working on his behalf.

“It is via these agents that we’ve invited him to join us on our forthcoming tour of the United States and we are currently awaiting a reply.”

Earlier, Harrison revealed his client is on the verge of choosing the Wanderers after rejecting a similar offer to join the Scottish champions. However, the story took another twist when latest reports said that Rivaldo failed to arrive for an expected meeting with Wanderers officials over the weekend, putting his move to the Premiership club at risk.

The Brazilian international was believed to be in Barcelona at the weekend and Wanderers expected him to fly on to England to tie up his much-protracted transfer, but Rivaldo sent a message asking Wanderers to come and see him in Spain, or follow him back to Brazil to secure the deal.

However, Harrison believes the former Barcelona and Milan star should complete his move to The Reebok in a matter of days.
Harrison said that all that was needed to complete the deal was assembling the relevant parties to finalise Rivaldo’s move to the Reebok. The agent claimed the deal was never dead as once thought.

“Because Sam Allardyce, for the moment, is away on holiday and the chairman (Phil Gartside), I think, is in Australia and I am in Qatar, it’s a bit difficult to do the deal now,” Harrison said.

“But I would think in the next seven days, we should have it done. “The deal has never been dead - it just went a bit quiet in the press, which is the way we wanted it.

“He said he wanted to play in the English Premier League and that he was impressed with Sam Allardyce and Bolton Wanderers. He’s done his research and he’s impressed.

“It’s just a matter of getting together and signing the paperwork.”
Reports in Scotland initially claimed the 32-year-old was close to joining Celtic, after The Bhoys invited the South American for their pre-season tour of North America.

Na wa for this guy.
"Jose Mourinho favoured directness and used to throw Robert Huth or John Terry up front when Chelsea were chasing the game, a ploy associated with the industrial era of English football management."
