S/Africa withdraws bid
South Africa has decided against a bid to host the 2008 African Cup of Nations.
The decision comes two weeks after it won the right to host the 2010 World Cup - the first African country to do so.
Football association president, Molefi Oliphant, said South Africa would prefer to host the Confederations Cup in 2009 as a dress rehearsal.
“Hosting three major football tournaments in as many years is not a good idea so we are withdrawing our 2008 African Nations Cup bid,” Oliphant said.
That leaves Ghana and Libya in the running with the Confederation of African Football executive expected to decide later this year after World Cup-style inspections of the candidates.
Ghana hosted the event in 1963, 1978 and were co-hosts with Nigeria in 2000. Libya staged the event in 1982.
Egypt will host the 2006 edition of the 16-team event in Cairo.
