Real Madrid ace Figo slams Portugal pal Deco

Portugal star Luis Figo has slammed the inclusion of Deco in Luiz Felipe Scolari's squad on the eve of their opening Euro2004 clash with Greece.
Figo says the Brazilian-born Porto midfielder will affect team spirit in the camp, explaining to El Pais: "I don't think people would be happy in Spain if I became a Spanish national and played for the Spanish side.

"It's something that distorts team spirit and I don't agree with it."

Figo added: "If you're born Chinese, well, you have to play for China.

"I have nothing against those who do that but it's superficial.

"It looks like you're trying to take advantage of something. That's my opinion and I'm not going to change it because he is in the team

This is old news. And Figo has denied it. Conspiracy theorists in Portugal claim the "news" was leaked by the Spanish press (Spain are in Portugal's group) to destabilise the host nation's squad.

Scourge, Deco is Brazilian born. He got his first Portugal cap days after getting his citizenship sorted.
Ironically, in his first game for Portugal, he scored the winner in what was a 2-1 victory for Portugal over-you guessed it-Brazil.

It's strange how he was picked by Scolari-ex Brazil coach.

This is a reflection of the mafia and bigmanism going on in Portugal's team. Rui Costa has been benched by Kaka at AC Milan for some time now. But Rui, Figo, Cuoto and a few others constitute a mafia in that team. Figo has been saying this just because he wants Rui to always play. Nonsense!
