England Shamed By Its Fans Once Again!

Some things never change!

The sooner the indisciplined English go home the better!

England fans clash with police in Portugal

.c The Associated Press

LISBON, Portugal (AP) - Police fought with about 400 soccer fans in a five-hour street battle that resulted in 14 people detained, including a dozen England fans.

One police officer was injured and required three stitches in the violence Monday night in southern Portugal, police said Tuesday.

Ten fans - seven Englishman, one Irishman, one Scot and one Portuguese - required assistance at a medical center, the statement said.

Police dispersed the fans and cordoned off several streets, with the unrest ending at dawn. The 12 detained England fans were to appear in court, but the hearing was postponed until Wednesday.

European soccer's governing body did not want to immediately link the disturbance to the European Championship.

``Unfortunately, this is not very different from what happens during summer in the Mediterranean,'' UEFA spokesman William Gaillard said. ``There are many such incidents from Portugal to Greece.''

Gaillard said that for now he is regarding the violence as an isolated outburst.

Police said from national headquarters in Lisbon that the fans, most of them English, first clashed with police in two bars in Albufeira, a coastal vacation resort about 120 south of Lisbon. Police were ``provoked and assaulted'' by the fans, the statement said.

The confrontation spilled into nearby streets when fans threw glasses, bottles and bar chairs at police.

``Faced with this scenario of growing violence and destruction, an intervention became necessary by the riot police, mounted police and police dogs,'' the statement said.

When they give too much publicity to something like this, then it's bound to happen. Even other non english fans looking for a bit of aggro lnows who to taunt. Personally, i think they should shoot one or 2 of them and that will be the end of it.
