DARE-devil robbers yesterday had a field day in Asaba, the Delta State capital as they raided homes and offices in the Zappa area of the town.

At the end of the nearly four hours unhindered operation, millions of naira were lost as jewelry, wrist-witches, handsets and other valuables were carted away by the bandits.

According to eye witnesses, the robbers, believed to be between the ages of 18 and 22 years, invaded the area at about 12.45 a.m. and operated until about 3.30 a.m.

Over 18 houses, including the residence of a member of staff of The Guardian, Mr. Babalola Adelalure, were raided with substantial valuables made away with by the bandits.

Adelalure, who is with the Circulation Department of The Guardian, lost his mobile handset and some cash belonging to the Women Wing of the Asaba branch of Owena Progressive Association, to the robbers.

While the operation lasted, the robbers who were fully armed with automatic rifles and other sophisticated weapons, rent the night with gunshots that reverberated in all parts of the town.

Victims had their gates blown off while bullets shattered many glass windows and wooden doors.

In a particular residence, expended bullets littered the floor.

No one was shot by the robbers, but many of the victims, particularly males were beaten up while some skipped their high fences to hide in the surrounding bushes.

The victims claimed that they telephoned the police, but lamented that nobody came to their rescue.

"We do not have any police in this town. For three hours, bullets were flying everywhere and not one policeman came to our rescue even when we contacted them," one of the victims stated yesterday.

It was learnt that a team of mobile policemen in a convoy of about five vehicles arrived the area of the robbery shortly after the robbers left the scene.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Charles Akaya, confirmed the robbery incident in an interview with The Guardian, but lamented that the public was not co-operating with the police command in its bid to bring criminal activities under control.

Akaya admitted that he was contacted at about 1.15 a.m. and that he subsequently instructed his men to mobilise and arrest the situation.

"However, the initial information I had was that the robbers were operating around Ogbeke Square and as my men were moving in, the robbers were retreating," he stated.

He said that security has been beefed up in the state capital and that everything would be done to fish out those responsible for the incident with a view to punishing them.

"I have been appealing before and I want to seize this opportunity to appeal to the public once more that crime fighting is not a police affair alone. It should be the joint efforts of all members of the society," Akaya added.
