Nations Cup jersey: Ministry distances self from adidas contract

Oluwole Josiah, Abuja

Ministry of Sports and Social Development has again stated that it was not involved in contract negotiations with adidas and the Nigeria Football Association on the kitting of the Nigerian Super Eagles.

Chief Press Secretary to the Minister, Mr. Charles Chikezie, said the NFA wanted the Eagles to be kitted by the sportswear company and the ministry had to let it be.

He explained that the ministry would want the NFA to be independent as long as it took decisions that would enhance the development of football in the country.

According to Chikezie, the Minister of Sports and Social Development, Alhaji Musa Muhammed, has continuously received criticism from sections of the media for decisions perceived to be interference in NFA affairs.

He noted that it was expedient for the minister to allow the NFA to have its way, as it would be solely responsible for decisions taken by it.

Chikezie also clarified the minister’s charge to the NFA over the Nations Cup, noting that there was no indication in the minister’s speech at the AGM in Owerri suggesting that the NFA would be sanctioned if it failed to win the competition in Tunisia.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the NFA, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, has also denied that there was any order from the minister for the NFA to win the Nations Cup.

He told newsmen at the Glasshouse that the charge to ensure a successful outing and the predictable reaction of Nigerians should Nigeria fail to win the cup were understandable.

According to Galadima, Nigerians would expect the Super Eagles to win the Nations Cup, and if they don’t, it would be unpalatable.
