Benin and S Africa Friendlies!

Post by YUJAM »

Either Benin is better than we think or Tunisia is overhyped as usual.

S Africa face Senegal in Dakar tomorrow. BTW, it looks like Eniwoke is in Dakar to cover the match.

Soccer-Senegal's Diatta and Daf to miss South Africa friendly

By Eniwoke Ibagere

DAKAR, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Senegal defenders Omar Daf and Lamine Diatta are to miss Sunday's friendly against South Africa in Dakar due to injury, a team spokesman said on Saturday.

With the African Nations Cup only a week away Diatta is struggling with a thigh strain and Daf is recovering from a knock on his ankle.

"I don't think it's something serious but coach Guy Stephane has decided to give both of them rest," Senegal Football Association spokesman Mbacke Seck told Reuters.

"It's a chance to see other players in the friendly but Daf and Diatta will be okay for the Nations Cup," said Seck of the pair who have been key figures in the Senegalese side in the past four years.

The Nations Cup starts in Tunisia next Saturday.

Senegal are drawn against Mali, Burkina Faso and Kenya in the first round group stage, while South Africa will square up against fellow former winners Nigeria and Morocco and tournament debutants Benin.

South Africa's preparations have been overshadowed by a dispute between the country's football association (SAFA) and their recently suspended coach Ephraim Mashaba.

Mashaba's suspension, for allegedly alienating South Africa's top players and weakening the side, was overturned by a Johannesburg High Court last Friday.

But the SAFA has named Mashaba's assistant April Phumo to lead the team in Tunisia. The new coach and his squad decided to keep quiet on arrival in Dakar to concentrate on the friendly.

"No comments at all, let's think of Sunday's game," Phumo told reporters before a training session for the match.
