Jay Jay: Sole survivor of Tunisia 94 Tournament 11
By Clement Nwankpa Jnr
WHEN the 24th African Cup of Nations kicks off in Tunisia on Saturday, a lot will be expected from Nigerian captain Austin Jay Jay Okocha for obvious reasons. He is the only player among those listed in the Tunisia 94 Tournament 11 who will be at Tunisia 2004.
The other Nigerians then listed in the Mastercard All Star team were left back Benedict Iroha, attacking pair of Daniel Amokachi and tournament top scorer Rashidi Yekini. At 20, Okocha was however the youngest among the top 11 listed 10 years ago.
Okocha was featured in the central midfield position alongside Ghana's Abedi Pele Ayew in a 4-4-2 formation. Cote d'Ivoire's young skipper Sergei Allain Margui was featured from the right side of the midfield while Amokachi filed out from the left.
The back four had Ghana's Frank Amankwah and Iroha as the full backs with the Zambian pair of Elijah Litana and Harrison Chongo at the centre. Yekini and Ivoirien Joel Tiehi were the twin strikers. Egyptian keeper Ahmed Shoubier was between the sticks.
The technical study group that selected the team of the tournament comprised Mawade Wade of Senegal, Egypt's Abdou Saleh El Wahsh, Ghana's C.K Gyamfi, Adegboye Onigbinde of Nigeria and Algeria's Rachid Mekhloufi. Each selected one player for each of the 11 positions.
Jay Jay was not in the running for a place in the team of the tournament until the semi-final match when he held Ivoirien midfielders spellbound.
His cross-field pass picked out Finidi George down the right and the latter's cross resulted in the first equaliser scored by Yekini in the match which the Eagles won on penalties.
Then playing for Entracht Frankfurt in the German Bundesliga, the player who had caught the continent's attention at the African Youth Championship held in Mauritius a year earlier went a step further in the final against Zambia seducing Pele of Brazil with his bag of tricks.
Incidentally, before the game against Cote d'Ivoire, Okocha had only started in the opening game against Gabon. He would later be replaced in the 58th minute by Mutiu Adepoju and subsequently battled to make Clemence Westerhof's squad.
In the next game against Egypt, he was a 66th minute substitute for Adepoju only for him to sit out all 90 minutes in the Quarter final against DRC on the bench.
It was therefore an Okocha, yearning to impress, that was given the nod against the Ivoiriens and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
If he made the team of the tournament 10 years ago, many believe he is a front runner for the player of the tournament award this time.

I wonder what became of the rest of that "team" . Hmmmmmmm.
2 of the finest indigenous coaches Nigeria ever had lost in a space of 4 days. Dear Lord, is this a sign that you are taking away from us what we failed to appreciate? I pray for forgiveness of our sins. I pray for the humility to recognize our wrongs and the humbleness and wisdom to right our ways.
REST IN PEACE COACH STEPHEN KESHI!!! REST IN PEACE COACH AMODU SHAIBU!!!

So Okocha is playing for Bolton on Wednesday.
It seems that Jay-Jay has special treatement in the Eagles camp and can turn up whenever he wants to.
Interestingly Song is also the only survivor from the IL's of 94 that went to the forgettable 1994 WC.
