Can Garuba take advantage of Molefe?

Even the S Africans seems to acknowledge that Molefe is the weak link in their squad. Can Garba take advantage of him?

Second, can Abbey George pass the test against the likes of Bukley and Zuma?

Mabizela's own goal sinks Bafana

Dakar - Bafana Bafana captain Mbulelo Mabizela lived every soccer player's nightmare on the eve of the biggest moment of his playing career.

Just a few days away from leading Bafana Bafana at the African Nations Cup, the country's youngest captain contrived to sentence his team to defeat in the cruelest of fashions.
Senegal showed why they are among the favourites

That he lay sprawled on the pitch for a good 60 seconds after he'd lobbed the ball over André Arendse and then pushed Jacob Lekgetho (himself the scorer of an own goal only last week) away as he tried to console him was understandable.

For while most of those who took part in this game would not be rushing to get a video recording, the Tottenham Hotspur player was one of few who can hold their heads up. But soccer is a cruel game and history will remember Mabizela as the player who cost Bafana a match that could have lifted a dispirited country.

Though outclassed by the slick El Hadji Diouf-led Senegalese in the cauldron of the Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor, Bafana appeared set to snatch what would have been a confidence-boosting draw.

Siyabonga Nomvete had given Styles Phumo's men a
deserved lead on the quarter-hour mark with a sweetly-struck shot from just outside the box. This after the Udinese striker had missed two clear chances (on 11 and 13 minutes) during a five-minute spell in which Bafana dominated and peppered the hosts' goal with shots.

But when Papa Malick Diop equalised with a free header following an Ousmane Ndoye free kick on 28 minutes, it was downhill all the way for the visitors.

Bouoyed on by the about 60 000 fans, who chanted nonstop to the beating of drums, Senegal showed why they are among the favourites to win the continent's premier competition in Tunisia.

Ndoye dictated terms in the midfield where Shoes Moshoeu was exposed for the veteran he is.

While back home he does as he pleases as he leads Kaizer Chiefs to victories, here Moshoeu struggled to cope. Ndoye proved too fast and slick for him and the 38-year-old midfielder just could not do anything and Phumo duly pulled him off ten minutes into the second half.

If Moshoeu's age showed, Bafana's Achilles heel that is the rightback position persisted.

Phumo used Thabang Molefe at the troublesome position and to say the Le Mans player is just not the right player for the job would be an understatement.

Previous incumbent Tony Coyle was seen conversing with McBeth Sibaya on the sidelines (they were not part of the playing personnel) immediately after Molefe was skinned alive by Diouf. He was probably saying he could have done better.

While that is debatable, Molefe's failure to cope with Diouf's pace and guile was a serious indictment on those who selected him.

The manner in which he rushed into tackles only to be left lying on the pitch, his miscalculations and the way he gave Diouf space to turn is worrying.

Seeing his team-mate's misery, Mabizela took it upon himself to stop the Diouf threat. And the captain did a good job.

For a significant part of the second half, Mabizela made timeous and effective tackles to stop the Liverpool striker.

That was until that blooper. Before that though, the Senegalese also exposed Bafana's failure to deal with aerial balls.

Failing to stop the opposition by legal means, Molefe and Jacob Lekgetho continuously conceded free kicks. Ndoye sent them all into the box and almost every time a Senegalese player got to it. Bafana were lucky not to go 2-1 down on 35 minutes when Patrick Mayo cleared Diouf's header from another Ndoye free kick.

Three minutes later Arendse pulled off a great save to deny Diouf, who'd connected a cross from the right with his head.

The second half was a bit poorer than the first, but Senegal dominated. Attempts by Phumo to improve matters for Bafana by bringing on the likes of Bennett Mnguni, Jabu Pule and Stanton Fredericks failed.

Senegal (4-4-2): Sylva; Coly (Ibrahima 81), Diawara, M Diop, Daf; Camara, B Diop (Cisse 66), Diao (Cissokou 81), Ndoye (Diagne 81); Diouf, Niang (Kamar 66)

South Africa (4-4-2): Arendse; Molefe, Mabizela, Mokoena, Lekgetho; Zuma, Moshoeu (Mnguni 67), Mhlongo, Buckley (Fredericks); Nomvete (Pule 77), Mayo

Referee: Abdellah El Achiri (Morocco)

Assistants: Abdelaziz Dahbi and Ahmed Belkhatir (Morocco)

Yellow Cards: Ndoye 24

Crowd: 60 000

Please stop asking stupid questions. Soccer is a team sports, except by Okocha's definition.

Phew......This is going to be a very good tournament.

P.S Yujam,

I don't think Garba Lawal will start a game in the tournament. If CC sticks to his 442, I think Ekwueme will get the nod or Kanu in a diamond formation.

Evans Bipi, had declared to the press, “Why must [Governor Amaechi] be insulting my mother, my Jesus Christ on earth?”
