Although he had the advantage of playing them after obviously seeing the LFC game, still, its his quick thinking about the game and the motivation that impresses most...

Quiet revolution of sorts in Italian football. I think the Azzurri are poised for a comeback in the not too distant future.

Why?

Lotta young Italian players starting to emerge- Sassaulo, Atalanta, Genoa, Torino, Milan, Napoli, Fiorentina, etc although Inter remains meh.... Plus Juve steadily moving to an Italian core; always a good barometer for Italian football.

@Kaji, nno.

1. Which 2 teams [managers] are playing the best football?

Chelsea first and foremost. The second side is not so obvious. Liverpool have been exciting but question marks remain over their defensive fortitude. Tottenham, Beloved have dazzled. Surprise package, Soton.

2. What can you make of conte and Klopp interms of tactics?

One expected Conte to default to a back three and his settled shape has proven a perfect fit thus far. Most impressive has been the workings of the midfield. Aside from the City game, they've matched most three-man midfields well with two, though the tucking in of the wide forwards mustn't be overlooked. Has Conte made good enough use of the backups, would be one of few questions asked. Willian steps in nicely for Pedro and the latter covered for Costa well, however, it would've been better for Batschuayi to have been worked into the setup to offer an option. A settled lineup is always an advantage however, the losses through injury are exaggerated in such instances, should consistency be broken.

Liverpool have been easy on the eye in two of three thirds. Great energy, good variety, forgive one for drawing parallels to Rodgers' second placed side. Good on the good foot, weak on the back. That the team has brought into the geggenpress is a tribute to Klopp and of a very average side, from a personnel point of view, he's made a title-challenging outfit. Can they go all the way? Do they have the energy? Can Klopp mask the weaknesses with an aggressive press for a full 12 rounds? The loss Mane will be lessened by the return of Coutinho. To think Liverpool are going full tilt sans Daniel Sturridge is commendable.

3. Also among the top 6 teams, which teams look like they need some addition to push for to the top 4 and title in this transfer window?

All of them.

Ranieri for the sack? What is the going wager rate?

Tinkerman has failed to adjust to anew reality...

Would be a huge mistake though...

^Two games from the boot. The moment they slip into the drop zone, he walks the plank. Leicester have crumbled undder the weight of the honour they deservedly acquired. If they beat the drop, he'll be gone in the summer. Stay of execution. The squad was never ready for the celebrity that came, the icing on the cake. Many careers were completed once Hazard put Chelsea ahead. Survival mode now with barely an army to fight with.

@ Coach,

Some random thoughts on Madrid vs Espanyol

Many times I find myself wondering why I am able to see a game unfold, tactically, yet paid, professional managers right there on the sidelines fail to either see it, or adjust accordingly.

Espanyol, coached by returnee to Spain from Watford, Quique Sanchez Flores.

Typically set up his team for the counter. But what struck me, and they were several-

1. The line of first engagement.
Football managers have a lot to learn from the game of basketball. For instance, the principle of the half court game.

2. If u are an underdog, and Espanyol are, what is the sense in pressing upfield?
QSF appeared to understand this, but was never willing to enforce it on his players. Diop was especially culpable on this.

The attacking game from ZZ's Madrid is anchored on keeping the filed wide and often the most important pass is the crossfield switch, or the mid-range cross for the central striker attacking from the blind side..Knowing this, like QSF obviously did, why the vertical press?

3. Not every turnover is an opportunity for the counter. I would argue that for an underdog on the road, it is more an opportunity for stabilization. They key about the counter is timing. And for the timing to be right, it requires situational awareness.

Football is a game of decisions. Sadly, you wont find too many high IQs in football.

Was very impressed with Napoli's approach at the Bernabeu, although they could've squeezed the lines better. Although it appeared to be a question of choice, since they opted to start with the Guinean CM, Diawara.

For me the best match of this CL week....

As for ur beloved, surprised at the general "woe is me" reaction. With all due respects, Arsenal is not on the same level as Munich, and I tried to warn you guys a few months ago...

The EPL often gives the illusion of that which simply is not there...

For all his box office success, there's a reason Schwarzenegger never made it to the Oscars, except as a guest!

@Tx, the issues with the half game are plentiful, to begin, what would be deemed the desirable qualities for team selection? One would assume work ethic, defensive nouse and stamina would rank high on any such lists. Take a team like Sunderland for example, an Anichebe would perhaps rank above a Defoe for this purpose and yet, minus his penalty box pedigree, wold hope not have abandoned them entirely?

The assumption is that such an approach is about graft and the proverbial 'getting stuck in'...Far from it...

Its really about awareness of space and movement, and the decision making to support these...Using Sunderland as an example, a player like Anichebe wont even be in the stadium, let along start!

I recall Onigbinde's Nigeria employing the 'half court press' successfully in a friendly vs Scotland just before the 2002 WC.

- Maximum flexibility in terms of the quality of players.
- Pace upfront; blazing pace
- Out ball, when there is one is the deep out-swinger with the intent of pushing the targeted CD wide
- The speed is for the deep threat and to further stretch the space between the attacking players and the defenders at the point the ball turns over, esp during set-pieces.
- With a team like Madrid it means multiple undefended zones between the CDs and FBs and behind the FBs
- Other focus of defensive clearance is to concede the maximum number of throw-ins possible. Why?
Disruption of the flow of the game...
Rich target for situational high press...
- The formation is a 4-1-3-1-1
- In its full expression, it is 5v5 at the defensive end, and 4v3 in MF. And even if the CD pushes forward, it is still 4v4
- the '1' behind the lone striker is a 'free role', but more in the NP phase.
- Movement is lateral, but marking is 1v1, beginning from the edge of zone 2; the idea being to minimize unnecessary movement.

Two banks of five set up to invite the opposition on. A central press applied within the defensive half, intention being to recover possession, or force play out wide. One recovered, six man counters are initiated with both fullbacks, wingers and wide central midfielders moving forward. The central attacking third should be overwhelmed with inverted runners from wide and the middle men. Width maintained by either fullbacks or wingers, with the other inverting. The final attacking shape would be 3-1-2-4, with the 2 serving as the second wave, moving forward in tandem with the counter but perhaps holding back (edge of the box) to recover cleared balls.

Above all, the key thing is situational awareness. That means creating the scenarios which trigger a counter, with the two "1s" being the main flag men...

More than energy and stamina, it is awareness and discipline that is key...

Have full-backs completed their conversion to full-blown attackers?
Modern full-backs are so attacking we are living through another variant of the paradox that existed in 1990, when, to English eyes at least, a back five tended to be more attacking than a back four. These days, a back four is often more attacking than a back three.

Clyne and James Milner at Liverpool, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker at Tottenham Hotspur, whichever of his many options Guardiola throws at the problem, all essentially play as midfielders. That may be one of the reasons why this is on course to be the highest-scoring season in Premier League history.

The most effective full-backs have been Chelsea’s Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso. With the additional central defender, they have been emboldened to push forward to such effect Alonso has four goals and two assists this season, as does Moses.

The march of the fullback is much to with the leniency afforded by the opposition. Why not play 4 vs 4 in attack? Seldom does the opposing forward track the fullback, but what if he wasn't supposed to? What if the strikers dropped deep to middle to cut out passing lanes for the CBs forcing them forward...then, a reasonable distance from goal, the press was applied
