OKPCHA NAMED "GREATEST" PLAYER IN BOLTON HISTORY
DREAM TEAM STAR MAN
JAY-JAY OKOCHA (Bolton). The master of magic.
JAY-JAY OKOCHA has been hailed as the greatest player in Bolton’s history.
And few will argue after the Nigerian’s stunning display in last night’s Carling Cup thriller at The Reebok.
Sam Allardyce led the praise for Okocha, who signed off in superb style before heading to the African Nations Cup.
The midfield master scored two stunning free-kicks in an amazing semi-final, first-leg clash with David O’Leary’s Villa.
Allardyce said: “He produced some awesome stuff. His second goal has to be a candidate for goal of the season. He is an inspirational player.
“I think he is the best player this club has seen, even going back to the time of Nat Lofthouse.”
Okocha will be a huge miss for next week’s second leg, though Bolton already look to have their place at the Millennium Stadium booked.
Hero Okocha will be back for the February 29 final and there is no more entertaining player in the country to grace that Cardiff stage.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It would be Bolton’s first Cup final since losing at Wembley in this competition in 1995.
But the way they are playing, their fans can start dreaming of a first major piece of silverware since the 1958 FA Cup final triumph.
If Okocha is Bolton’s best player ever, this is also arguably their best team — as Allardyce had claimed on the eve of the game.
You will never tire of watching repeats of this match — in particular Okocha’s second strike on 80 minutes.
A free-kick was awarded 25 yards out, level with the corner of the box.
I will let Allardyce explain the rest. “He bent the ball with power with the outside of his right foot and sent it flying into the top right-hand corner. It was awesome.”
So was Bolton’s whole display, as it took them just 17 minutes to race into a 3-0 lead. After scoring only one goal this season, Allardyce had told Okocha it was time he struck again prior to joining up with Nigeria.
