Forgotten Liverpool youngster could evolve into just what Jurgen Klopp needs
Ovie Ejaria has proven a skillful attacker for Reading, but could he stake a claim to be involved in Klopp's long-term plans

By David Alexander Hughes

Liverpool’s Ovie Ejaria may have been drifting under the radar for most, but the performances of the youngster so far this season have invited plenty of plaudits from regular watchers of the Championship.

The former England U21 international joined Reading in the summer on a season-long loan with a view to obtaining some valued competitive league minutes and aiding his progression from youth level to senior level football.

Now at 22-years-old, the window to establish himself as more than just a once-promising youngster is growing smaller by the season. A failure to impress this season could be enough to persuade the Liverpool hierarchy to let the attacker go in this coming summer.

However, his displays for the Berkshire side in the Championship so far this season have been impressive and resulted in him acquiring plenty of admirers. Furthermore, his skill set could also be one that benefits Jurgen Klopp’s side in the future.

But just how good has he been and could he feature for the Reds in the coming seasons?

Ejaria has played a number of roles for Reading within the midfield over the previous few months, from a box-to-box midfielder, to more recently, an attacker located behind the striker.
Whilst not particularly defence orientated, he does press the ball well when required to do so and tends to have a good tactical understanding of where he should position himself when his team are out of possession.

However, it’s his dribbling ability that impresses most. From midfield, he has averaged a sound 6.24 attempted dribbles per 90 minutes this season which ranks as the third-highest for any Championship central midfielder who has played over 1000 Championship minutes.

Ahead of him are fellow young stars Swansea City’s Bersant Celina and QPR’s Eberechi Eze, although Ejaria can better both in terms of a higher success rate in those dribbles with an average of 61.46%.
Although not boasting the most muscular of physiques, his dribbling is aided by a tall frame which allows him to stay upright when heavy challenges come in, meaning he can usually carry his side up the pitch and into the final third.

Under Klopp, Liverpool’s midfield tends to be risk-averse and stable in the German’s favoured 4-3-3 formation. However, there is a growing demand for more ball-carrying midfielders in the side, such as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita, who can dribble the ball through a compact and rigid defensive shape.

With this in mind, Ejaria could be a prime candidate to evolve into what Liverpool need.

However, he must first illustrate he can provide more in the final third if he is to ever be truly considered as a selection candidate for Klopp.

He has managed just three goals and one assist so far across his 15 league appearances for Reading, which is largely unremarkable. Furthermore, his combined Expected Assist (xA) total of 1.1 does not illustrate him as a particularly creative player, certainly not to the level required to succeed at Liverpool.

This, therefore, will be the area of his game that he is required to improve on in the coming months if he is to find a role in the Liverpool squad upon his return in May.

You reason like a child. On what basis should he have been capped versus Tanzania?
Tanzania game was meaningless, a 15 minute cameo wouldn't hurt anyone.
England had vowed never to lose any eligible players to other countries as they
Are still smarting from the loss of iwobi and others. If England want Ejaria, Lookman
Etc they will get no matter how much they want to play for Nigeria. The weight of the
Pressure will be too much for the players to say no to. Now it will be harder to cap these
Players as they have now played for England youth sides.

But we have so many players ahead of him and middle of the park is not our main issue at the moment. We need to address our Right and Left full back issues first.

Who is ahead of ejaria ?

Other than Mikel, we do not have a better midfielder.

Not capping Ejaria vs Tanzania was a colossal mistake.

Even if he switches allegiances, it is a complicated matter and will take a while, and you know England will be putting pressure on FIFA to delay the change or change Ejarias mind.

We had no excuse to not cap him.

Even if he was injured with a broken foot we could have rolled him on the pitch for the last minute in a meaningless match.

Its hard to overestimate the value of coaching in a player's development.

There's never been much doubt about Ejaria's talent. The issue is how to properly develop it. And to put it to the service of the team game.

IMO, he's not been well served by the folks at Reading.
You look at Eze, Olise and Carvalho and you see clear differences in development...

We watched this very boring video, 500 times, of Sacchi doing defensive drills, using sticks and without the ball, with Maldini, Baresi and Albertini. We used to think before then that if the other players are better, you have to lose. After that we learned anything is possible – you can beat better teams by using tactics." Jurgen Klopp

Don't worry let the haters keep hating.

The ones hating are usually the ones with ulterior motives of pimping homebased. They are a transparent bunch.

But Olise was his team mate at reading?... What I see is real raw talent here, you can’t teach a player this type of close control, reminds me of Kanu in a way.

And Olise at Palace is miles ahead of Olise at Reading.

The close control is important, but even more important is how you use it to advance the team game.
That part of his game is not growing at all...
