Godfrey Oboabona Fails Late Fitness Test, Ruled Out Of Argentina Clash
Rizespor central defender, Godfrey Oboabona, will not be on parade at the Estadio Jose Pinheiro Borba (Beira-Rio) on Wednesday afternoon when Nigeria clash with Argentina, after failing a late fitness test.
The 23-year-old had previously been on the sidelines for about a week, and only returned to full training on Monday evening, but his comeback bid to dress against the Albicelestes was not successful.
''No I will not be fit enough for the game with Argentina. Hopefully in the second round, I will rejoin the team,'' Godfrey Oboabona said to SL10.ng.
The former Sunshine Stars skipper is expected to be replaced in the starting lineup by Fenerbahce loanee, Joseph Yobo, who would be making his 99th appearance for the Super Eagles.
Godfrey Oboabona had to be substituted around the half hour mark in Nigeria's opening fixture against Iran after injuring his foot.
The Super Eagles will book their passage to the second round if they avoid defeat to Argentina or Iran fail to get maximum points in the other group match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
