IT was a full house at the national football team, Taifa Stars, camp after overseas pros led by TP Mazembe pair of Mbwana Samata and Thomas Ulimwengu joined the rest of the squad in training ahead of this weekend’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Nigeria.

The Stars returned home in the early hours of Wednesday from a weeklong training tour of Turkey and went straight into the camp to fine-tune for the much-awaited tie against the Super Eagles at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.

They took part in light training last evening with Samata and Ulimwengu as well as mercurial winger Mrisho Ngassa, who features for South African side Free States, joining their teammates for the first time.

The trio did not travel with the team to Turkey due to club commitments and will have three days to work with the team’s new technical bench under Charles Boniface Mkwasa, who has replaced sacked Dutch trainer, Mart Nooij.

Their presence will certainly be a morale booster for the rest of the team and Mkwasa, who faces a tough battle of wits against Sunday Oliseh, who like his Tanzanian counterpart will be leading the Super Eagles in his first AFCON qualifier on Saturday.

But while Mkwasa is heading into the match looking to get Tanzania’s campaign back on track with a win against Nigeria after losing 3-0 to Egypt on match-day one, Oliseh will be hoping that his charges maintain their perfect start to the campaign following a 2-0 win over Chad in the opening match.

In a related development, the Nigerian delegation is expected to jet in today, according to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The Super Eagles are scheduled to fly out from Abuja this afternoon and arrival at the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in the City tonight at 10pm.

NFF said in its official website that Super Eagles delegation will be made up of 23 players, technical officials, a number of NFF Executive Committee members and management, NFF staff, some representatives of the media, football stakeholders and members of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club.

Both countries have not met at senior level since December 1980, but there have been clashes at junior level and an African Women Championship qualifying fixture in recent years.

That December, 35 years ago, the Taifa Stars had good reasons to hope for an upset when they held reigning African champions Green Eagles to a 1-1 draw in Lagos in the first leg of the 1982 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture.

But two first half goals by John Chidozie and Christian Nwokocha in Dar es Salaam two weeks later sent Tanzania packing from the race.

In 2011, Nigeria’s U-23 lost 0-1 to their Tanzanian counterparts in a 2012 Olympics qualifier, but thrashed the visitors 3-0 in Benin City.

The following year, the Flying Eagles also sent Tanzania’s U-20, known as Ngorongoro Heroes, out of the race for the 2013 African Youth Championship.

Last year, the Super Falcons eliminated Tanzania’s senior women from the race to the 9th African Women Championship in Namibia.

The first ever meeting between both countries on July 6, 1972 ended in a scoreless draw in a friendly in Dar es Salaam. Four months later, Nigeria’s Eagles edged two quick friendlies 2-1 and 3-2 in Benin City and Lagos respectively and achieved another 2-1 win over Taifa Stars at the 2nd All-Africa Games Nigeria hosted in January 1973.

In February 1976, both countries played out a 0-0 draw in a friendly in Dar es Salaam on the Green Eagles’ way into Ethiopia for the Africa Cup of Nations.

And in March 1980, Nigeria won the opening match of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (for which they eventually emerged champions) 3-1 in Lagos.
