Nothing grabs people like a good story. EA Sports is hoping to capitalize on that concept. The developer/publisher released a trailer announcing ‘The Journey,” a new single-player story mode coming to FIFA 17. Take a look at the trailer:
Gamers will begin their “journey” as a 17-year-old prospect named Alex Hunter. You’ll have an option to choose any English Premier League team to begin your career. Depending upon the manager of that club and how you’ve been able to build Hunter’s ratings, he could slot in at different spots on his new club.

As you can see from the trailer, the experience will be sparked by cinematic screens and a full storyline.

The influence and success of modes like NBA 2K’s MyCareer are apparent in this new venture for FIFA; Although, EA Sports is no stranger to gritty stories attached to their sports games. Champion Mode in Fight Night Champion is still perhaps the best blend of story and action in a sports video game campaign feature.

If The Journey is as compelling as Champion Mode, then the FIFA series will have a winner. I know this is premature considering the new game hasn’t been released, but the next step will be allowing FIFA gamers the opportunity to create their own characters for The Journey.

Ultimately, that could then become the players used in full 11-on-11 action online. That’s likely years away—if it’s coming at all.

For now, we’ll wait to see where The Journey takes us
