Video Technology in Use
The friendly between France and Spain saw the use of Video technology. It took about 30 seconds to 1 minute and I think this is a good option to have.
13:09
Hold on.
It has been chalked off.
Christophe Jaillet's cross is headed across the box by Layvin Kurzawa and Antoine Griezmann can nod in.
The referee awarded the goal, but then got a word in his ear from the video assistant to say Kurzawa was offside.
CORRECT decision and video technology has worked on this occasion.
13:38
On-loan AC Milan winger Gerard Deulofeu gets on the end of David Silva's cross to convert the second.
The Spaniard celebrates but the assistant's flag is up.
Disallowed? No, wait.
The referee consults with his video assistant, who checks and sees Deulofeu is actually on side and the goal is given.
CORRECT decision once again. Cannot argue with video technology thus far.
Culled from BBCJust to recap...
France have had a goal disallowed because of the video assistant - the correct decision
Spain have had a goal awarded because of the video assistant - the correct decision again.

They've used it twice. First to disallow a French goal, then again to allow a Spanish goal. Very crisp and properly used.

The concern was it may take too long to reach a decision but it seem to take less time than it takes to celebrate a goal.platinum wrote:They've used it twice. First to disallow a French goal, then again to allow a Spanish goal. Very crisp and properly used.

That concern has always been ridiculous. People fear change so much.Cito wrote:The concern was it may take too long to reach a decision but it seem to take less time than it takes to celebrate a goal.platinum wrote:They've used it twice. Hopefully it goes mainstream.

When exactly may it go mainstream ?platinum wrote:That concern has always been ridiculous. Griezmann was celebrating his goal well into the night until the video evidence disallowed the goal

Re: Video Technology in Use
That didn't make sense. You just contradicted yourself with your statements. You said it takes more time and then went ahead to contradict your self by stating a decision was reached while a goal celebration was still in progress.tfco wrote:actually it takes longer than it takes to celebrate a goal.Cito wrote:The concern was it may take too long to reach a decision but it seem to take less time than it takes to celebrate a goal.platinum wrote:They've used it twice. I have seen goals celebrations and arguments that ensues which has taken more than double the one minute or less it took to make the decisions last night. Heck, even without the arguments and pleadings to ref sometimes celebration runs longer.
Yes Arsenal v Burnley and about ManU would have been 6-10 points less on the table thanks to those offside goals getting chalked off.

Re: Video Technology in Use
...may be in use where they can afford it. At concacaf wcq T&T v Mex, a goal by TnT was disallowed but replays by tv showed the guy was on side. I doubt if African nations will be able to use it.
Re: Video Technology in Use
Hmm what about poor decision like player dive for PK and hand ball for PK?

T&T goal was wrongly disallowed and it cost them that game.mcal wrote:...may be in use where they can afford it. At concacaf wcq T&T v Mex, a goal by TnT was disallowed but replays by tv showed the guy was on side. I doubt if African nations will be able to use it.

Nonsense! ManUre vs Tottenham - 1.1m across the goal line, and no goal!tfco wrote:actually it takes longer than it takes to celebrate a goal.Cito wrote:The concern was it may take too long to reach a decision but it seem to take less time than it takes to celebrate a goal.platinum wrote:They've used it twice. Why not? If they install them then they will use them. Cost? FIFA can help where necessary.mcal wrote:...may be in use where they can afford it. At concacaf wcq T&T v Mex, a goal by TnT was disallowed but replays by tv showed the guy was on side. I doubt if African nations will be able to use it.

Re: Video Technology in Use
Why would the linesmen raise the flag for offside? It they are correct, fine, but if they are wrong, how would you go on from there?

Re: Video Technology in Use
Heard argument about time but so what? Is time more valuable than getting the call correct? IMHO, the time argument is weak. Consider how long a tennis game takes and yet people watch it and here people are bringing up a couple of minutes that may be added to get a call correct.
The difficulties of statistical thinking describes a puzzling limitation of our mind: our excessive confidence in what we believe we know, and our apparent inability to acknowledge the full extent of our ignorance and the uncertainty of the world we live in. Re: Video Technology in Use
There is a huge difference between tennis and football though. A set of tennis consists of several more or less independet plays that are interrupted anyways. In football it is different. Take offside decisions for example. Will the linesmen keep raising their flag or not? If they raise the flag and video ref decides that their decision was wrong, how does the game continue? It is impossible to restore the situation. The logical thing therefore would be to continue every play and only stop if after the video ref has decided that it was indeed offside. That means the game continues until the ref announces the decision. If that for example takes a couple of miinutes a team might score in the meantime or a player might commit a foul that warrants a sending-off.Enugu II wrote:Heard argument about time but so what? Would a possible red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity still stand in such a scenario? Or red card for violent conduct?
