20 teams league season - 38 matches
*Extremes.

38 draws 0 defeat = 38 points
13 wins 25 defeats = 39 points

No wonder United got stucked on 6th for so long despite remaining undefeated in the league for almost 7 months!!! :scared:

On the flip side, a top class goalkeeper could win you knockout championships like FA cup etc.
Play draw and get into penalty shootouts and the opponents are already scared like heck :D

This is assuming the other areas are at least average or close to average. I will take my defense any day.

For me its the central defense. No matter how good a goalie is ,if the defensive pair ahead of him are hapless,he will concede. Its only a matter of time. A rock solid defensive pair can keep you in the game for long periods ,giving you a chance to win the game. Italy 06 comes to mind..

I guess that is weekly Kalla said what he said.
When him and Rigo Song were at their prime, Cameroon was a tough nut to crack. These new Cameroon kids at the ANC also prove the same thing.
I can see where he is coming from, given that he has played the game at the highest level.

Every position is equally important. Any coach who doesn't think so should go ahead and play with 10 men deliberately :!:

It's the Goalie!

You build from the back.

You win more games having an excellent goalie above all positions.

Anyone who has played the game will tell you that all things remaining equal that the goalie is the key to having great teams. Not just good teams.

You try an unbalanced team concentrating on a particular position because you deem it to be more important and see how far it will get you, every position is important and a balanced team is what you should be looking for no matter what the level of competition!

Juventus win over Barcelona last week is a prime example. One team had arguably the best attack on planet Earth, while the other had the defense.

For those championing GKs as the position of greatest importance, two words, Victor Valdes...and with that, countless honours.

Football is a team game. The team is the most important position on the pitch.

I was leaning towards it's a team sport but then I've always believed the adage that you can win games with a decent goalie but you need a great one win tournaments.

For example, look at Ghana!

However, the Germans - the most advanced in the game - are planning to get rid of the goalie.
Apparently, their top notch goalies have very few saves in a game, otherwise they just sit idle most of the time. So why not have them be more productive as an extra outfield player who can also play goalie instead.

They have a point and can make it work.
