Sorry to re-open old wounds, I must confess after the referee blew the final whistle, I went to wash my ford escort XR3i for nearly 4 hours, the neighbors thought I was crazy, that was the only day I came close to crying, on a lighter note the referee for the Nigeria Argentina game, Mikael Everstig, I worked with him in a recent SAP project, he told me FIFA are crooks but did not go into detail, wanted to slap him but reminded myself he was my work colleague :taunt:

I bought some cans of Guinness and got drunk. I slept off woke up in the middle of the night and still felt bad.

You should have slapped him for allowing that goal Cannegia scored after the quickly taken freekick. That game was Maradona's last game if I recall, he got busted for drugs after that. We were 2 goals down by halftime....damn... the argies have been punishing us for a long time. For me it was a long walk to back to the room in boarding house, was very angry with Oliseh and wanted to wring Egu's neck. Had comfort in the fact that our football had come of age, we had become world beaters. Good thing we don't see tomorrow, could not have imagined 23 yrs later we'll be yet to see the SE surpass them at the WC. We didn't know how good we were, neither did our players. Abacha started the hatchet job.

I did nothing; I was a GI stationed at vilsek in Baveria - Germany enjoying the best beer & women in the world but at that time didn't know it. No one including me really thought we would advance over Italy not with all the chances we failed to take or the elementary mistakes we made defensively over and over or our failures to kill the game despite that Italy handed it to us not once but 3 times.

The referee is now my good friend, he is actually a nice fellow but it's FIFA that are corrupt, due to marketing and revenues, the likes of Argentina/ Italy will always be favoured over any African side, that game was in Nigeria hands but they failed to score the 2nd goal which would have killed off Italy, the rest is history

... and I am more inclined to believe him even if no proof is provided. Some of the games (matches) African teams lost is very suspicious.

Italy should have been reduced to 9 men with that Maldini foul/pull on Yekini when he was through on goal.

What did he really mean? That he was under instructions himself?

Remember though that he sent off Zola after being tricked by Eguavon's play-acting, believing he'd been fouled. But Maldini should also have been red carded for pulling down Yekini when he was 1-on-1 with the GK.

Nigeria was never two goals down at any point in the match. We scored first and then proceeded to concede two quick goals which was hours the match ended so we were only down a goal (1-2).

I was pissed at Eguavoen...and the ref should've sent off Maldini for the professional foul on Yekini.

Not sure about the ref favouring Italy in that game cos if he did then he probably wouldn't have sent off Zola (when Italy was down a goal) especially since he didn't actually make contact with Eguavoen in that "foul".

That was the first and only time I was in pain for watching Nigeria, that team had the potential to go far I still think Eugavan made it easy for the referee to point to the spot!

There's two different games in context. The game against Argentina which Marko's friend refereed and the game against Italy. We were down 2 goals by halftime against Argentina.

No. We never trailed by more than a goal at any point in USA 94. We scored first in every game.

Tbite- I'm now 23 but I saw the game live sitting on my Dad's lap
Ayoakinfe- I'm driving. Let me park and write 10 reasons we lost.
CIC- We've beaten this topic to death at a beer parlor
Sinequanon- where's the scientific proof that Nigeria was robbed. Let's enter a debate on why we lost. I'll take on anybody except Pa Ohsee
Waffiman- Wenger said we lost because our players weren't playing to instruction and I believed him.
Bigpokey- We wouldn't have lost if Mikel was old enough to Marshall the midfield
Seara- The body lost but the soul were saved
Kingloku- Omo meeeen! I went to jogodo that day. That's wisdom right there!!!!!!

well the referee told me FIFA told them to go easy on certain teams including a confederations cup a decade ago, the man told me all this because he did not think I had any connections to Nigeria lol
