After losing their first 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa, Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has offered an explanation as to why they lost to the South Africans.

Goals by Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau meant the Super Eagles began the series on a sour note and speaking after the match, Rohr explained why his team was not able to get a result from the match.

“My young team made a very good first half, they played very well but they didn’t score and the second half we knew the experienced team of South Africa could be dangerous on the counter and that was what happened,” he explained.

“We tried to put in three offensive players to bring some power to the attack but it was not enough. We knew that South Africa were unebeaten in 17 and now 18 games but I believe with this kind of games we make progress.”

Daft excuses. The loss is on him.

And I say that without wishing to turn this into an inane and clapped out debate about WOWOs or journeymen coaches. Zzzzzzzz

This loss is on him. The problems were there to be seen after about 20 minutes.

Still it's only a single defeat - Rohr's first - so no need for hysteria just yet.

It's not about the result, it's the way he confidently selected proven junks and his excuse is his players got tired after playing well. We need a coach to select the best players , and the best players are obvious for us to see,

Better than blaming the pitch, referee, FA officials, injuries, players, lack of payment, etc. But I'm yet to see a Nigeria/Nigerian coach who admits he was out coached, out thought, out executed and his team out hustled and out played.

Simply say I messed up, buck stops with me and I should do better.

Rohr has come by far the closest to choosing the best players of all our recent coaches. He has made one or two strange decisions but is still far better than either of SSS, Oliseh , or Keshi in terms of choosing best players.

None of those players were junks. Has it occurred to you that lack of international experience playing so many new players at once, nerves, and maybe poor tactics could've contributed to their performance?

Maybe we all need to pause for a few seconds. As I have said before, Nigerian players are only going to play well, if they are motivated.

No matter who was selected, and I say this loosely. Based on the clamor by some for Imoh, Friday, Onyekuru, Tammy and co, Nigerian players are not interested in the nations cup. I believe they are certainly more focused on qualifying for the Mundial. This current crop are no exceptions. Even the ones that were lousy today, Etebo, Nacho and Onazi, played at a different level vs Algeria.

Skeptics should never be selected. He lacks basic fundamentals to be a professional goalkeeper for either competition.

Nigeria needs to take each match as it comes. Stop looking ahead to Cameroun. However, if the rumor that the ANc is just being used as a warm up for the World Cup, hmmm. Stop fooling us fans and just field a young developmental squad.

We will know if this rumor is true if there are more than four outfield changes and a goalkeeper change for the Cameroun game. The good news is half of the team last night as well as a few newbies, Aina, Bazee and others make for a very strong and deep squad that you will need next spring.

The line up that will feature against Cameroun will be half of today's line up and that veteran leadership and experience is the difference between a captain like OnaI who peaks out of the post first half prayer, sees Iwobi half way to the dressing room and bows down to continue the five second prayer. If that were Stephen Keshi, smh...

The good news is we now clearly know who should not be playing against Cameroun and who should not be starting.

Seems like a reason but it will sound like excuses if he doesn't accept responsibility for allowing it to happen and taking the blame for not preparing his team well enough for those things he mentioned not to have occurred,

So after saying all that he should've ended by saying "it's my job to foresee these things and prepare the team accordingly. Today I failed to do that adequately and I take full responsibility for that.

Even on the anniversary of his death if Stephen Keshi were to speak from the grave, he would say that he was castigated for drawing 2-2 against a stronger SouthAfrica team on the same field but this foreigner gets paid double to lose the opening game at home. If he was asked about his comments, Big Boss would probably have said, "Don't mind the stupid white dude"

Yes the game yesterday put a spotlight on coaching ability of Rohr. Using mostly inexperienced players in an important match, with apparently no tactical plan, is plain dumb. Here is a small write-up from Goal.com on Coach Rohr.

It's all Rohr's fault . Where did he think the goals will come from when he was fielding Kelechi who was rarely playing for his team. This same as Iwobi who is a peripheral player with his club. On the substitute bench he has Musa and Osimhen who have done practically nothing all season. Then he fields Etebo who only runs without control. Simon Moses who aimlessly dribbles without results. Rohr needs to reinforce the team with Kelechi Nwakali surely he possesses far football sense than Etebo and he plays regularly with his even though it is a second division club. Ezekiel Imoh must be recalled . He is far better than Kelechi , Iwobi, Moses Simon, and definitely miles ahead of Musa .
Onyekuru must be included into the team he is the only inspirational and electrifying player we have right now. His exclusion is an aberration of the highest order . There is no iota of justification for it.
Honestly I have this trepidation that Rohr will destroy Super eagles like his brother Betis did few years ago. Obviously Germany's style of coaching doesn't seem to fit Nigerian styles of playing.

Thank you. We 'fumbled' that match to inexperience on our side. Hope Rohr learns from his mistakes.

But that didn't stop the Big Boss   from qualifying and winning the Afcon 2013 with a team made up of inexperience and lots of local players.
Meaning it's all on the coach.

Wasn't that match win or go home?

One loss in a year and people are calling for Rohr's to be fired.

It is not the end of the world.

I think the game was lost from the player selections.

I just felt that we did not have enough firepower to defeat SA. Ideye, Ighalo and Mikel would have helped.

At this point I would not mind giving Oboabona ,Egwuekwe even Ambrose a recall. These defenders are just too young, we need at least one experienced defender.

Rohr's formation and tactics were wrong. He should have removed a midfielder early into the second half.

We did not need three DMs for SA, (because Etebo is not an AM).

Iwobi is our most creative player and he was pushed to the wings, he should have played AM.

Iheanacho is not a 9.

Musa should have started, he was the most experience forward, is very direct and has more goals for SE than anyone in that team.

Where is Ejide? He is certainly better than the GKs we have here.
