Gabriel Okechukwu (left) goes for goal vs Sierra Leone
Striker Gabriel Okechukwu could well start against hosts Ghana in a 2017 WAFU Cup Group A match Thursday after he made a huge impact as a late substitute in a playoff game against Sierra Leone.

He came on in the 77th minute last night, provided an assist and saw his superbly-taken volley crash against the crossbar with the Sierra Leone goalkeeper well beaten.

Ghanaian fans mobbed the former FC Karpaty of Ukraine striker was a tonic Nigeria needed to shade a hard-fought contest.

“He looked great and could start against Thursday,” a top team official told SCORENigeria

The Akwa United star said he was delighted for the team effort and hopes they make a statement at this tournament.

“I am so excited we won and qualified for the group stage, as the tournament progresses we will improve as a team,” he said

“I wish to thank the coaches for the opportunity to be part of the team,

“We are all looking forward to the next game on Thursday.”

He was equally appreciative of the fans who mobbed him at the end of the playoff against Sierra Leone.

“It was great seeing the Ghanaian fans touching me and take photos with me,” said the left-footed strier.

“I hope to do more if given the opportunity in the subsequent matches.”

The assist was from Rabiu Ali, unless they're talking about the free kick.

KPOM. It was Rabiu's assist for sure.

Is Rabiu Ali denying a younger player a chance to play?

The guy is 37, he has served Nigeria well. Isn't it time to retire from the home based Eagles?
