Morocco name squad, plan to fly 8,000 fans to Abidjan

Post by Sir V »

I can't wait to watch this match.

CIV will have themselves to blame if they don't qualify for Russia.

Morocco have published their squad to face Ivory Coast in the final game of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying slated for Abidjan on November 11. Leaders of Group C with nine points, the Atlas Lions need just a draw to book their place in Russia while the Elephants (eight points) must win to qualify.

Southampton midfielder Sofiane Boufal returns to Morocco team after missing their two previous matches. Oussama Tannane and Youssef Ait Bennasser were ignored due to injury while Hamza Mendyl, Sofyan Amrabat and Achraf Bencharki figure on the list.

Amiens SC defender Oualid El Hajjam was handed his first call-up to the outfit led by 2015 Africa Cup of Nations winning coach Frenchman Herve Renard. Moroccan officials have revealed they would fly up to 8,000 supporters to Abidjan to help push the team to victory.

Squad

Goalkeepers: Mounir El Kajoui (Numancia, Spain), Yassine Bounou (Girona, Spain), Ahmad Reda Tagnaouti (IRT, Morocco)

Defenders : Mehdi Benatia (Juventus, Italy), Ghanem Saiss (Wolverhampton, England), Jawad El Yamiq (RCA, Morocco), Achraf Hakimi (Real Madrid, Spain), Nabil Dirar (Fenerbahce, Turkey), Oualid El Hajjam (Amiens, France), Hamza Mendyl (LOSC, France), Fouad Chafik (Dijon, France), Badr Banoun (RCA, Morocco)

Midfielders : Karim El Ahmadi (Feyenoord, Netherlands), Younes Belhanda (Galatasaray, Turkey), Hakim Ziyech (Ajax, Netherlands), Fayçal Fajr (Getafe, Spain), Soufiane Boufal (Southampton, England), Noureddine Amrabat (Leganes, Spain), M’barek Boussoufa Al Jazira (UAE), Amine Harit (Schalke, Germany), Ismail El Haddad (WAC, Morocco), Sofyan Amrabat (Feyenoord, Netherlands)

Forwards: Mimoun Mahi (Groningen, Netherlands), Rachid Allioui (Nîmes, France), Khalid Boutaib (Malatyaspor, Turkey), Achraf Bencharki (WAC, Morocco)

Do you realize Morocco currently tops the group and only needs a draw to qualify?

Morocco will go through.

CIV has been poor for a while but their potential is there and Zaha will be back.

They will have to play their best game since winning the ANC to beat Morocco under Renard.

You are that confident? Where is this comming from?

Honestly I want CIV to make it because they actually have a well rounded and potentially very dangerous team if they can get their act together. But Wilmots isn't helping matters.

I see a 1-1 draw with a late Morocco equalizer, possibly in injury time.

This team is spineless.

See the squad Ivory Coast used against Mali:

Squad
Goalkeepers: Sylvain Gbohouo (TP Mazembe/COD) Axel Kacou (Tours/FRA), Horthalin Blé Zadi (Africa Sports/CIV)

Defenders: Serge Aurier (Paris SG/FRA), Eric Bailly (Manchester United/ENG), Lamine Koné (Sunderland/ENG), Wilfried Kanon (Den Haag/NED), Adama Traoré (Goztepe/TUR), Joris Gnagnon (Rennes/FRA), Ghislain Konan (Vitoria Guimaraes/POR)

Midfielders: Cheick Doukouré (Levante/ESP), Franck Kessié (AC Milan/ITA), Geoffroy Serey Dié (FC Basel/SUI), Jean Michaël Séri (Nice/FRA), Seko Fofana (Udinese/ITA), Sékou Sanogo (Young Boys/SUI), Jean-Philippe Gbamin (Mainz/GER)

Forwards: Maxwel Cornet (Lyon/FRA), Gervinho (Hebei Fortune/CHN), Salomon Kalou (Hertha Berlin/GER), Seydou Doumbia (Sporting Lisbon/POR), Roger Assalé (Young Boys/SUI), Jonathan Kodjia (Aston Villa/ENG), Wilfried Bony (Swansea)

I do not believe Morocco will be able to withstand this.

If Morocco qualify, it will be the first time we will have 2 African teams at the WC since... [WHEN]?? A long time. A part of me thinks IVC is a stronger team, and will represent Africa better at the WC. Then another part of me remembers all the bullet holes that IVC has in their feet from shooting themselves in the foot and repeatedly squandering opportunity. Remember that injury time goal against Greece that knocked them out of the last WC?

Nigeria
Egypt
Tunisia
Senegal
Ivory Coast

I see about three of them getting through to the second round. If the five teams, Tunisia is the only one I do not really trust.

You obviously haven't watched this Morroco team play, it's a very solid and compact team and they have been playing some delightful football under Renard... CIV will have their work cut out for them in these encounter
