Head to head rule did us in. Our goal difference was superior and our points tally was the same.

That was when the term Angolized came from.

That 96 team was good enough for the WC Semis.

A couple of factors, including the odd choice of Kano. It proved more favourable to Angola and worked a bit against us with our Europe based pros

Angola came prepared, & played well, but we should have buried them.

Vince also let in a soft goal. Falied to gather a FK that trickled in.

I do not recall the exact details of the loss away to Angola, but I remember the Kano one very well.

KOC was all giving us confidence all over the forum that the boys were ready to do the business.

On top of it all Ghana now qualified and were trolling us all over the place, until PaJ dropped a nuclear bomb on them with Ghana go hear Wien!! (Jos bcos dem beat Cape Verde and Bafana Bafana    . Kai PaJane wicked O!)

We simply blew games we should have taken

Gabon 1-1 Nigeria
Rwanda 1-1 Nigeria
Nigeria 1-1 Angola

An away win in any of the first 2 should have done it, not to talk the unecessary concession Enyeama did in Kano ("toros") for the third

Yes it was the match that finally did us in but by no means was it what cost us. Had we beaten either Rwanda or Gabon on the road, then the draw with Angola would've been irrelevant. So each one of those three drawn matches cost us.

I will blame Chukwu. Go check our line-up against Angola in Kano.

Prof, the NFF gave ‘rookie’ Oba Martins a pass to play for his club instead - over Chukwu’s objections...
Otherwise, all of our ‘best’ players played - JJ, Yakubu, Kanu, Yobo, Osaze, Udeze, Olofinjana (even Makinwa).

They blew it. Our 2005 team was better than our 2009 team!

And Angola was not more difficult than Tunisia!

We simply threw away points we had no business throwing away! If I was a mathematician from a different planet, I would predict that Nigeria would have been more likely to have qualified for the 2006 WC than the 2010 WC!
Buhari, whose two terms thankfully ground to a constitutional halt in May. (One thing both democracies have going for them is that their leaders, however bad, have only two terms to swing the wrecking ball.) Under Buhari, growth per head also plunged to 0. An economic agenda drawn from the dusty pages of a 1970s protectionist handbook failed to do the trick. Despite Buhari’s promise to tame terrorism and criminality, violence flourished. Despite his reputation for probity, corruption swirled. FT

I wonder how the team would have performed at that world cup. SE took Ghana, Senegal, Zimbabwe to the cleaners in the AFCON that year. We got to the semi final while playing decent attractive football. This was good team for sure. We lost the opportunity to solidify it going forward.

Should never have played in the aptly named Sunni Abacha stadium at home to Angola!

That Angolan player called "Akwa" really showed us pepper in that game, there was another Rwandan player that destroyed us when we faced Rwanda as well... Can't remember his name.

And Chidi Odiah and Chris Obodo and Vince Enyeama...
Kevin Amunike was a midway 2H sub and NOT the reason we drew that game.
