Nnamdi used to be my friend when we were in University. We never talked about soccer. I didn't even know he was a fan. Its funny how I have quite a few friends now doing soccer commentary on radio and TV in Nigeria. Must be some selection bias

So what? All countries' keepers are risks going into the world cup. I guarantee you we'll see "great" keepers doing bone headed things and "risky" keepers coming good. The Enyeama we've been shouting about was punching balls that he should have caught one of which led to a goal that late Keshi yabbed him about.

The Let's lynch Akpeyi crew won't like his analysis.

Dude is clueless, so South Africa got a special training program for goal keepers and they remain super underachievers?. Alampasu should be tested, other home based keepers should be given a chance, Akpeyi is not it, it's that simple. Why is it so hard for folks to understand that football is strictly about ability.

Agreed that others ought to be tested, but can you really attribute South Africa's underachievement to failure in their goalkeeping department? Bafana Bafana suffer from greater issues than that. Sub-par talent pool for one, which results in chronic inconsistency (even by African standard) despite having a solid and organizational efficient federation and a string of world-class coaching crews. Success does not hinge on goalkeepers' technical abilities only!

The game is for 11 players on each side, it helps to have a decent keeper that can keep you in the game and improve the confidence of the defenders, but making a case for clueless Akpeyi on the basis of a made up superior training program in South Africa is pure fallacy. Against Senegal in their last game the SA goalkeeper gifted Senegal a goal due to an avoidable error, just like Akpeyi. Facts, and numbers don't lie

The point I'm making is: even with a decent goalkeeper, South Africa is not in the big league of the top hitters in Africa, talent-wise. That, nevertheless, doesn't take away from their superior training facilities, programme and better run football federation - relative to most other African peers. Club performances, which also benefit from drawing larger African talent pool, tend to reflect these positive indicators. However, at national team level, this is a different story, because the pool is simply average and limited. Training can only take you so far without inherent abilities as so much polishing can't turn any stone into a gem. (This sounds valid for Akpeyi's talent at 30/31 too). On South Africa, their former Brazilian coach Perreira of illustrious pedigree hinted as much.

Imagine if South Africa were to have the talent base of Senegal and/or Zambia, for instance; and combine that with their existing positives. Things would most likely have gelled better and panned out differently for them. Seen from this perspective, these other two countries don't have the infrastructure, training programmes and the federation at the level of South Africa. I hear Nnamdi alluding to this advantage of training over there, although we still see elementary errors in Akpeyi's game.
