A World Cup Perspective, Part 1 of 5

AFRICA'S APPEARANCE LEADERS

So, the 2018 World Cup draw is on December 1. The teams that accomplished firsts for Africa are back for more. Egypt has Africa’s first appearance (1934), Tunisia, the first to win a game (1978), Morocco, the first to get to the 2nd round (1986), Nigeria, the first to get beyond the first round multiple times (1994 & 1998), and Senegal, well it’s the only African country currently without a losing win-draw-loss record overall.

So, here we go. Including Russia 2018, here are the multiple appearance leaders:

7 times – Cameroon (82, 90, 94, 98, 02, 10, 14)
6 times – Nigeria (94, 98, 02, 10, 14, 18)
5 times – Morocco (70, 86, 94, 98, 18), Tunisia (78, 98, 02, 06, 18)
4 times – Algeria (82, 86, 10, 14)
3 times – Egypt (34, 90, 18), South Africa (98, 02, 10), Ghana (06, 10, 14), Cote D’Ivore (06, 10, 14)
2 times – Senegal (02, 18)

One point of note is that we have no 4 time successive qualifications, although several have been to the big dance 3 times in a row (Nigeria-twice, Cameroon, Tunisia, Ghana and Ivory Coast. This would have actually been the 7th World Cup in a row for Nigeria if it were not for the quirky head to head rule in 2006 that gave Angola.

Part 2 will look back at the 5 toughest group of death faced by the Africa’s best.

Thanks Bro. Sometimes we are tempted to think Ghana and Ivory Coast were replaced by lesser teams, but all the North Africans were doing this world cup thing even before us. I'm just hoping for a favorable draw.

Choi, we really messed up in 2006, that would have made 2018 6 straight world cups...I guess that goes for Cameroon (would have been 7 straight)
What pissed me off more was when Angolan team members were interviewed upon arriving in Germany and they were mentioning that they were just "happy to be there"
I havent forgiven that team for their complacency since

Countries that I believe will soon make their debut appearances as they have generally been consistent over the last 20 years

Burkina Faso

Countries I am not yet sold on as there is no evidence to prove that their recent flourishes are sustainable over the long term

Funny how no one mentioned Ghana.

The only reason Angola and Togo made it to the 2006 edition, is because a strong Cameroon, Egypt, Ivory Coast were all in the same qualifying group.

To put things in perspective - Morocco almost qualified from their group with 5 draws (1 point behind Tunisia). CAF been a joke.

This is a revisionist view.

You forget that the five teams that represented Africa in 2002 were spread out in all those groups including groups with Togo and Angola. Did Angola not have Nigeria in its group and did Togo not have Senegal? Let's not diminish the achievement of Togo and Angola who deserved their places at the 2006 World Cup. Places are not reserved for supposedly big names, they are earned by dint of hard work and results.

The Pharaohs were supposed to qualify in 1998 instead of Cameroon. The Pharaohs were leading in the group comprising of Egypt, Cameroon, Zimbabwe and Liberia. Because of a crowd trouble in Egypt v Zimbabwe, the match that Egypt won was replayed in a neutral ground in Europe. This time it ended in 0-0. A result that favoured Cameroon . And that is how Cameroon qualified. If my memory serves me right.

I think Zimbabwe should have qualified. Samora Michel and Gido always complain about how they were screwed over by Thief Hayatou. Zambia also should have qualified had it not been for that plane crash in 1993. They would have done some serious damage in 94 had that team not perished.

I think the emerging African powers I would like to see at future WCs are DR Congo, Burkina Faso, and Cape Verde. The Burkina Faso team that got to the 2013 AFCON final (with the physicality of Bance, and guile of Pitroipa and Traore) would have caused problems for many European teams. Cape Verde got cheated out of the last WC on a technicality even though they won their group (got DQd). Cameroon went instead and were treated to them and Alex "Bomb Scare" Song disgracing the African continent.
