PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: JOHN OBI MIKEL - NIGERIA SKIPPER CRITICISED BY ACADEMY FOUNDER

With Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel no doubt looking forward to learning his side’s group stage opponents for the 2018 World Cup when the draw is held this coming Friday, he has been criticised by the founder of an academy he attended as a youngster.

Former Nigeria Football Federation technical director Kashimawo Laloko, who founded the Pepsi Football Academy at Agege Stadium in Lagos, believes Mikel - a product of the institution - has not done enough to give back to the youth in Nigerian football.

“Mikel was brought to limelight through our Jos centre around 1995 to 2002. We gave him the breakthrough that made Nigerians to know him,” Laloko is quoted by the Vanguard.

“He was unpolished when he came but we refined him. If not for us, maybe, he would not be where he is today but since he became a star, I have not heard that he visited the Jos centre to donate a pair of jersey to the players there. That is most unfair.

“Some former players give us money for the running of the centres but Mikel has not done such. Osaze is an example of a player who paid us because he recognised what we did for him.

“There was a time we wanted to use Mikel in a advertising campaign for the academy but he shunned us. His agent was asking us to pay a huge sum of money but Mr. Nelson could not believe it and that was how the deal fell through. I don’t think Mikel has done well for Nigerian youths.”

With Mikel currently enjoying the off season, following the completion of the Chinese Super League's 2017 campaign earlier this month, perhaps he'll make time to give back to those who helped his rise in the game.

Laloko is a fool. Must Mikel give back to the academy because he came up through the academy? How many people that went through thr academy and didnt become a star gave back?

Not necessarily bit it would have been nice to do so. That does not mean Mikel is not giving back in other ways though.

Bros,

Cool down. Nobody is forcing Mikel to "give back"; It is only the responsible thing to do

Uncle 1naira and Pa Laloko are age mates so they know how they communicate with each other. We young ones can only siddon look but Mikel should give back and if he won't give back his crew shouldn't ask for money for advert campaign. Maybe Mikel is privy to some shady deals at Pepsi academy and decided to shut them out.

My take on it is that maybe Mikel did not have a good experience at the Pepsi Academy....I saw the pictures didnt really liked and he has collected his money.

Its not by force now, Laloko sounds like Mikel will never give enough back no matter what he gives.

There are always two sides to every story, so I would like to hear Mikel version before reaching conclusions. On the surface it appears that Mikel has acted despicably as he had an obligation to develop Nigerian youths but let us know the true story before jumping the gun.

Did Mikel ask for money to advertise the academy?

That concentration produced Mikel and Obafemi (if am right), likewise many others so shattap dia. By the way where is my own share of the amnesty money, as the commander of the Owo parapo militants, i was told your own share was enough to buy a jet! :D

That said Mikel has been a generous giver to niaja football, so Pa Laloko should have found a way to get around this rather than blowing it up in the air.

Way to go as if this would push Mikel in the right direction if he hadnt given before!

This is the attitude all over the country, not just Mikel. People herein are even saying they should go and produce another Mikel. Helping someone in that country is surely a thankless job, don't expect anything in return.

I'll advice them to should forget about assistant from Mikel at this point, if he hasn't done anything since 2005, it might be too late now.

Nobody can take that from them though, they produced Mikel and he has done well for the National team.

I believe the academy was paid the going rate when Lyn Oslo took JMO off their hands. I'm not sure if there were also add-on terms based on JMO moving on from Lyn Oslo to bigger things especially his well-publicised tussle between Chelsea and Man U. If Laloko is now appealing to JMO for charity purposes, this cannot be the right way of going about it.

Mikel gave back to Nigeria by paying the hotel bill of the Olympic team in Atlanta. We didn't hear Laloko complain then. The point is Mikel does not have to give back to the academy to give back. Someone said Obafemi Martins came through the same academy. We just read where he gave back medical equipment to a Lagos state hospital. That's giving back.

Laloko should be calling out people like yemibrassiere who took free Awolowo primary education when he was 25, took free bricklayer training at Government vocational Training college when he was 30 in 1975, and is still taking today at nearly 72. And we know he has no intention of giving back anything except what he gives back in open fields in Ekiti.

Is that necessary? Do you have to use such words to state your opinion?

When and how will those looting our resources give back?
At least we all can see how Mikel made his money, but trying to coerce him into giving to anyone
or anything is not necessary. Giving or not doing so should be his choice. Even if he is giving, why
can't he do so anonymously if he chooses? Enough of getting on the high horse.

Not only that, is it necessary to go to press about this ever... let alone as we are preparing for the World Cup. I think someone is just looking for attention. Wouldn't it have been nicer to reach out to Obi and express his concern
