The George Weah vs Jorge Costa incident
For our young whipper snappers who were not born then, Weah, now the presi elect of Liberia, broke Portuguese international Jorge Costa's nose in the tunnel during a European game when he was playing for AC Milan. He claimed that he did it because he could no longer take the racial abuse that the Portuguese player was dishing out to him during the contest. This happened during a time when FIFA was not as proactive about handling racism and his case was further damaged by the fact that no player on either side knew about the claims he was making.
Costa required reconstruction surgery because his nose was broken so badly. He ended up suing too. Weah was suspended six matches and ironically won
FIFA Fair Play award the same year.
It is likely that this is what angered Weah:

Anyway, here are his top ten goals in Italy from arguably the great African footballer to play the game:

There are instances when it is the most justifiable judiciary and most suitable sentence. Twas not by error nor misappropriation that FIFA duly awarded Weah for the fairness of his court. A job well done.
Re: The George Weah vs Jorge Costa incident
Power, Pace, Precision, Poise and now President...Weah had it all..World Class
Re: The George Weah vs Jorge Costa incident
The best footballer Africa has produced. He had everything; Speed, Strength, Technical ability, Accurate passing, and Flair.
Its a pity that he played for a completely disfunctional country, destroyed by warlords and civil war.
Would have loved to see Weah play at the world cup.
And his another player who owes his professional career to Arsene Wenger

Please it’s just not true that Weah was the best 9 from Africa. It’s nonsense ... Call him Africa’s first true major star, and Ill hear ya. Best 9? Again, that’s nonsense.
He was a 15 goal/season striker. Africa is not so bad that it’s best 9 ever can only average 15 goals. That’s Yakubu level striking. My personal opinion is that Weah thrived in that brief desert period between the peak of Romario/Baggio and Ronaldo. He just wasn’t that great when you look at things objectively...Stats don’t tell the whole story, but they don’t lie either.

Re: The George Weah vs Jorge Costa incident
And context is equally of importance. Serie A was very much a powerhouse in Weah's time with catenaccio commonplace in addition to some of the finest centre halves the game has seen. Much like the pound, goals then are by no means of the same value now. Somewhat a misnomer, as a goal is a goal is a goal, but time does influence the fluidity with which they come. Was Weah the best of the continent? Who knows
Who cares. He was class.
Who cares. He was class.
Re: The George Weah vs Jorge Costa incident
Jorge Costa was a hard as nails defender back in the day. Jorge Costa marking Diego Costa would have been interesting. Next to Maradona's goal, the best goal I have ever seen was Weah's goal for Milan where he was defending a corner in his own penalty area, picked up the ball in his box, ran the entire left of the field and scored at the other end.
Re: The George Weah vs Jorge Costa incident
Serie A was good and Weah was class, but whether he was the best isn’t really a question of “who knows/who cares”. Sports wouldn’t be sports without such comparisons of the greatest/best ...being a competitive endeavor, it’s part and parcel of the essence of sports to compare. Whenever people say things like who knows/who cares, it’s really because they don’t like the answer.Coach wrote:And context is equally of importance. Serie A is/was good but 15 goals in any league is underwhelming. What standard can we use to judge a 9 if not goals? Even if we throw in his assists, his stats are still underwhelming
