Stars of the 2007 U-17 cup

Post by nzeogwu »

Spain: De Gea, Bojan
Nigeria: Ajiboye, Chrisantus, Lukman
England: Victor Moses, Welbeck
Belgium: Benteke, Hazard
Germany: Kroos, Sukuta-Pasu
Ghana: Ransford Osei

Interesting fact: Moses was England's top scorer with 3 goals as the inside left and play maker. We look to him to be the everywhere man in 2018. His time is now and so is Ajiboye's!!

We watched this very boring video, 500 times, of Sacchi doing defensive drills, using sticks and without the ball, with Maldini, Baresi and Albertini. We used to think before then that if the other players are better, you have to lose. After that we learned anything is possible – you can beat better teams by using tactics." Jurgen Klopp

You mean those specific players selected and listed above or in review of the list of squad members for that very competition? I raise this question because an actual unbiased sample of players from different years (including 2007) from all the confederations do not show the fact that only African players have faded. In fact, just about 20% or so of U17 players progress to the top level after playing in the FIFA U17 competition, regardless of confederation and country. There are only few aberrations in Brazil, Costa Rica and I believe Mexico. See the Technical Report below:

The difficulties of statistical thinking describes a puzzling limitation of our mind: our excessive confidence in what we believe we know, and our apparent inability to acknowledge the full extent of our ignorance and the uncertainty of the world we live in. We are prone to overestimate how much we understand about the world and to underestimate the role of chance in events -- Daniel Kahneman (2011), Winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics

I'm familiar with your study, having looked at it in the past. But my problem with it is that it is by design looking at generalized patterns and doesn't appear to factor in certain and differing confounding factors in how players develop or are expected to, post U-17.

However my comment was specific to the African players above; and to the Nigeria 2007 U-17 team as a whole.

If you did a more specific comparison of the progression of the 2007 Nigeria and Spain U-17 players, the picture will most probably be different from the more generalized trends from the study.

The Nigerian 2007 u17 team was the most overaged u17 team Nigeria ever presented. The cheating was crazy.
Its nice when someone shoots ur murderer in the back, without asking to be paid.

Why are you wasting your time?

Most of the England players on the squad have fallen into obscurity or semi-retirement, playing are in places like Cambridge Utd (4th tier), Maidstone Utd (5th tier), Eastleigh (5th tier), Harrogate Town (6th tier), Gainsborough Trinity (6th tier), Nuneaton Town (Northern League), and Weston-super-Mare (semi-pro Southern League). At least one player (Nathan Porritt) even retired since 2015 - that is, barely 8 years after the 2007 U17 - after last playing at Billingham Synthonia (Northern League). SMDH

Chrisantus has been playing like a veteran the past 5-6 years.

His Spain, Germany and Belgium peers from 2007 are at their peaks....
