Football Rule Changes
After the controversy over the Kane penalty/offside against Liverpool, I was thinking how rule changes in football have simultaneously complicated AND made the game more entertaining. In the old days - offside was offside - no matter whether a player was active or interfering with play. Nowadays a player sneaks back from 10 yards offside (non-active) to score 3 seconds later and it is legit.
The other change that improved the game is the back-pass law (GKs no longer allowed to pick it up). It revolutionised goalkeeping. GKs could no longer be slow and unathletic. They had to be as comfortable with the ball at their feet as an outfield player. This is what directly led to the Hart-Bravo-Ederson issue at Man City. It also explains why DDG "heights" strikers when he is being closed down. It is weird watching old matches where GKs pick up back passes from their defenders, and teams (like Liverpool!) used the back pass to the GK as a tactical device to keep possession.
Any other similarly influential rule changes?

Hart is a bad goalie who is poor with his feet.wiseone wrote:After the controversy over the Kane penalty/offside against Liverpool, I was thinking how rule changes in football have simultaneously complicated AND made the game more entertaining. Bravo is a poor goalie except for shot stopping but is good with his feet. Sure he made a few mistakes but IMHO they were low confidence and concentration mistakes.
Ederson is a better all around goalie than both Hart and Bravo but I think Bravo is a better shot stopper.
Goalies were wasting too much time with the ball that's why they brought in all those rules.
An even more important rule is the one that prevents a goalie from putting the ball down and picking it up multiple times to waste time. They also used to bounce it on the ground before kicking it. That rarely happens nowadays.
BTW, Petr Cech improved but is still poor with his feet.

Re: Football Rule Changes
Cech is pushing 40. He is one of the GKs from the "old era" where GKs had to be good at goalkeeping and they could get away with being slow and cumbersome with their feet. Younger GKs like DDG and Ederson are so comfortable with their feet that they could probably make a decent living as outfield players!

Re: Football Rule Changes
Did he play outfield in adult professional football? Keep in mind that a lot of GKs started out as strikers in youth football and ended in up goal as adults.

Where do you pull all these "facts" from?wiseone wrote:Did he play outfield in adult professional football? Keep in mind that a lot of GKs starting out as strikers in youth football and ended in up goal as adults.

Keepers that started life as outfield players:
Samir Handanovic of Inter Milan
Donnarumma of AC Milan
Martin Stekeleenburg of the Dutch national team/Everton
Jens Lehmann (ex Arsenal)
Hurelho Gomes of Watford
Ali Al Habsi (ex Wigan)
...and many others...
