I had made a similar observation on a thread on the sponsorship a few weeks back. The NFF had never before approached this. I sincerely hope it does happen in the near future. Already the NPFL no longer depends on government money. Next up is the NFF itself.

NFF President, Amaju Pinnick believes the Federation is approaching self-sufficiency, following yet another mega sponsorship deal concluded this week.
Pinnick said the current board of the NFF is so close to its target of functioning without having to depend on funds from the Government as it continues to forge a strong partnership with corporate Nigeria.
In an exclusive chat with Brila FM, the FA Chief vows the Federation will keep working to build its brand-worth, perhaps, ‘to the point where they might not come to need a dime from the Government.’
He predicts that the subventions from the Government would, eventually, only be a plus to the FA’s income if the current process is sustained.

Self sufficiency through sponsorships? Hope not unless it’s just for a time. Let’s see what the revenue streams are. Is Pinnick quoting accounting?

My people read between the lines before you start jubilating. clothing/ merchandising is big bigness and could probably fund half of their budget if outsourced to a reputable offshore company say Nike

does NFF own stadia of its own; relative to Nigeria all these rubbish about independence from government are diffused issues

No need for national football organizations to own their own stadium(s). Government should not be sponsoring leagues teams either.
The role of government is to protect lives and institutions and not control their functions, which is what direct sponsorship brings.
If government can just maintain law and order, society will be better for it.

Think beyond what currently exists. NPFL has had in its plans for a few years now to support clubs owning their own grounds with 5000 capacity. However, it cannot fund grounds for government owned clubs. Additionally why does govt need to own clubs. In Nigeria govt got out of phone, out of airlines, etc. what exactly is gained by holding on to football clubs?

Government became 'owners' as a last resort when the privately owned clubs could not survive. Same way some 'banks' became government owned when they became distressed etc.
If owning clubs is 'profitable' with good return on investment, many businessmen will start to own clubs!

My question is self sufficiency for how long before they run back to the Government?

I agree with you that private interest in ownership of clubs depends on whether it is profitable. That is exactly the environment that should be there. However the claim that govt ownership is as a last resort is not true. Go back to the early days of socce in Nigeria, govt ownership has always been prevalent. It does provide political mileage and prestige without personal cost to govt officials.
