I believe their punting the ball forward is an attempt to exploit one of our natural attributes - speed.
Problem is, there is no point hoofing the ball out if the only target ever reached is the opponent.

One joke I make about this long ball thing is if the majority of long balls out of defence meant for our strikers only ever reach our opponents, then maybe we should start aiming them at the opponents. Chances are they'll reach our strikers.
Such is the inaccuracy of the long ball.

Then the other option is the 'killer' pass that only Mikel and to a lesser degree, Iheanacho seem capable if delivering. This is why it seems our strike force is so blunt. The poor through balls give them little or nothing to work with, crosses even less.
