Ray Wilkins: Former England captain dies (Title modified)

Post by Sir V »

Ray Wilkins: Ex-England captain in critical condition in London hospital.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43601801

St George's Hospital told BBC Sport that the 61-year-old is a patient and "his family have asked for privacy".

His wife Jackie is quoted in the Daily Mirror as saying he had a cardiac arrest and the situation is "very bad".

Wilkins, who also played for Manchester United, AC Milan, Rangers and QPR, has been working as a pundit for Sky Sports and Talksport.

Former Chelsea captain Frank Lampard wrote on Instagram: "All thoughts and strength with this man and his family tonight. An absolute gentleman."

Lampard's ex-Chelsea team-mate Didier Drogba posted: "Just found out about the news, be strong Ray Wilkins and family. We blue army are sending you our prayers on this religious day."

As a player, Wilkins won the FA Cup with Manchester United in 1983 and the Scottish league title with Rangers in 1989.

He made 84 appearances for England and captained his country 10 times.

Wilkins had spells as manager of QPR, Fulham and the Jordan national team.

He was also Chelsea assistant coach from 2008 until 2010, working alongside Guus Hiddink and Carlo Ancelotti.

Breaking: England & Chelsea Legend Ray Wilkins dies aged 61

Ray Wilkins, the former England midfielder, has died at the age of 61.

Wilkins, whose clubs included Chelsea, Manchester United, Queens Park Rangers and Rangers in a 24-year playing career that spanned three decades, fell ill after suffering a cardiac arrest last month and had been in a critical condition in St George’s Hospital, in Tooting, south-west London.

“Everybody associated with Chelsea Football Club is devastated to learn of the passing of our former player, captain and assistant coach, Ray Wilkins. Rest in peace, Ray, you will be dreadfully missed,” the Premier League club said on Twitter.

“It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we have learnt that former England midfielder Ray Wilkins has passed away, aged 61,” added the PFA. “The thoughts and condolences of everyone at the PFA are with his family and friends.”

A winner of 84 England caps, Wilkins played at two World Cup finals. He became the fourth player sent off for England when he was dismissed during the 1986 World Cup in Mexico in a game against Morocco.

Wilkins – known in the game by his childhood nickname “Butch” – played for 12 clubs and was on the coaching staff of several more, but is commonly associated with Chelsea.

He started his career there and spent six years with the Blues, while also having numerous stints as assistant manager. On one occasion, he led the side on a caretaker basis. Wilkins also managed QPR, Fulham and Jordan and had most recently been working as a pundit.

For real! RIP Ray.
We have been brainwashed by the Premier League that it's the best in the world. Nonsense. It's the best brand

He says that we are currently "brainwashed" into believing that the Premier League is the best competition in the world, and that we are now a long way off dominating the Champions League again.

I think Spain’s by far the best league.
