Another concacaf country Dominica pledge support to Morocco.

The US should be worried. They don't even have the support of Concacaf.

ecision timing given the growing geo-political tension between FIFA and UEFA, the head of African football has urged Europe to back Morocco’s bid to stage the 2026 World Cup.

Ahmad Ahmad, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) president, says that in return Africa will support the next European bid, likely to be for 2030, telling AFP: “Vote for us and we’ll vote for you next time.”

Garnering European support is pivotal for Morocco to stand any chance of upsetting the odds on June 13, a scenario clearly not lost on Ahmad, who replaced long-serving Issa Hayatou as head of CAF in March 2017.

He says that a Moroccan World Cup would offer significant advantages to Europe.

“Time zones, distance, fans, they are all of interest to Europe,” said Ahmad. “Visas also: Europeans don’t need a visa to come to Morocco. For all of that, we think that Europe should vote for Morocco.”

Ahmad’s comments come at a particularly sensitive time with both UEFA and the European Club Association increasingly irritated over the FIFA administration’s perceived policy of conquer and divide under Gianni Infantino.

Mounting controversy surrounds Infantino’s call for an emergency meeting of FIFA’s six confederation leaders to address the infamous $25 billion offer for the Club World Cup and Nations League that would change the entire landscape and structure of world football.

The Nations League, the first edition of which gets under way in Europe later this year, was initially very much a UEFA concept rather than a global affair (though CONCACAF have plans in place to host their own version) but UEFA’s thunder looks set to be effectively stolen if FIFA takes control of the event.

European clubs and leagues, anxious at the international calendar being stretched, are equally opposed to the Infantino proposal of a 24-strong Club World Cup to be held in June and played every four years, with the Confederations Cup scrapped in the process.

All this will be keenly noted by Morocco’s 2026 World Cup bid team who have been largely on the back foot throughout the rivalry with the heavily favoured joint bid of the USA, Canada and Mexico.

With Infantino understood to be privately strongly in favour of a north American tournament in 2026, Morocco will hope that Ahmad’s timely plea to European voters, right at the time when some federations might be wavering, will work against the FIFA president’s preference leading up to the ballot.

Having said that, there will be many more political twists and turns in the weeks ahead.

At least one European nation is throwing its support behind Morocco’s bid for the 2026 World Cup.

French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet says France will vote for the African country’s bid over the one presented by the U.S., Mexico and Canada. All of FIFA’s 211 member nations vote on the host on June 13.

“I don’t see myself not supporting a country that is close to us,” Le Graet said, according to L’Equipe. “Africa has only had one World Cup. That’s not a lot.

“Morocco is ready, even if they don’t have the same means as their fellow contenders. France only has one vote, but perhaps we will give momentum in Europe to choose Morocco.”
Back in February, reports emerged that support for the Moroccan bid was rising. The report added that the bid has garnered much support inAsia and South America, as well as its home continent of Africa.

Morocco splits Europe with Russia dissing US, Mexican football heritage

Quote:
Yet it is the number of western European nations backing Morocco that gives the clearest indication of a split among UEFA’s 55 members. Already, France, Belgium and Luxembourg have said they are on board while Morocco is hoping others will follow suit, not just those where French is the predominant language.

Top of that list is Russia whose ambassador to Morocco Valery Vorobiev said the north African nation’s bid was the best option terms of logistics due to it being a key gateway between Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

Quote:
Not surprisingly given the hardening of relations between Russia and the west and current global allegiances, Vorobiev also made it clear what he thought of the bid from the US, Mexico and Canada. “Objectively, the three candidate countries are weak in football, we all know the American, Mexican and Canadian football,” he said. “[It is] not real football.”

Unlike many countries round the world, Morocco has so far been loath to publicly criticise Moscow over its alleged role in the Spy-Gate scandal in Britain. Such diplomacy is being widely interpreted as being linked to the fact that 2026 bid officials are banking on Russia persuading its eastern European allies in UEFA to follow suit in supporting Morocco’s right to host at the fifth time of asking. Serbia has already fallen into line in that respect.

That is 5 UEFA countries. That have already declared their support.

Turkey could be the 6th. They are on the Muslim country ban list.

So where is all this South Africa will not vote for Morocco coming from?

It’s North America’s to lose. We’re not likely to go from Russia to Qatar to Morocco. Forget Europe supporting Morocco. They have better chances with Asia and Africa. Sub Sahara and Southern Africa are not guaranteed and Morocco themselves haven’t closed ranks with Africans in the past.

It's posted earlier that Morocco did not support South Africa at both Soccer and Rugby WCs. The biggest advantage they have is time zone with Europe. 104 votes is needed and they could get that easily with CAF 56 and Asia 47 to get 103 votes. So far, CONMEBOL are 100% for the America bid (10). America will probably get 30 out of 35 for CONCACAF minus the 3 hosting that can't vote, and will get most of Oceania if not all (11). That's 51. They then need 53 from UEFA, CAF and AFC. The Saudis have already pledged for America, likely the gulf countries will follow (6). Who gets the orients would matter, can't see East Asia ala China, Korea, Japan etc. not vote Americas, these nations have a lot of citizens vested in US and Canada. Same goes for South Asia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh etc.

In UEFA, not sure what the western nations would do as money talks. TV broadcasting $$ could be an issue and ofcourse time zone. They'll also want the strategic relationship with Africa that Ahmad is promising for future votes.

Morocco needs virtually all of Africa to solidify their bid, plus do well in Asia and UEFA.

Your calculation is wrong.

South Africa has already announced their support for Morocco. CAF will fully back Morocco. 56 votes is going to Morocco. The reason why Morocco didn't support South Africa is because Morocco was bidding against South Africa for the 2010 world cup. South Africa usually don't vote for the US on anything.

From UEFA, we already know of about 6 countries that will most likely support Morocco. Russia, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Turkey and Serbia. Russia could use their influence to get Austria, Belarus, Czech Republic and Azerbaijan to join them. Let say about 11 UEFA countries will vote for Morocco. That number could be more. The proximity to Europe is a major selling point. They will also need CAF backing in 2030.

From Concacaf, we know Cuba, , TNT(FBI investigation), Dominica, St Lucia will most likely break from the US for political reasons. That is 4 from Concacaf. There is smoke. There must be fire. I expect the number to be more than 4. This could be a major problem to the US bid.

Asia usually votes with Africa. We supported the guy from Qatar bid to be FIFA president. You also have the issue of Muslim ban affecting several countries in the region. China is not voting for the US. There is an ongoing trade war.

So do some quick math

UEFA- 11
CAf- 56
Asia-40( Lets say Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia flip. Lets say 7 countries flip, Qatar, Iran, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Palestine and etc will not follow the lead of Saudi Arabia)
Concacaf- 4 ( Cuba, St Lucia, Dominica, and TNT)

That will give Morocco 111 votes, margin for error will be 7. Assuming they don't get any Conembol votes. Venezuela and Bolivia will most likely not vote for the US. Blatter is working hard to flip Brazil for Morocco. They have strained relations. Also assuming all of Oceania votes for the US.

The world cup vote is fascinating. It will show the US how un popular they are to the rest of the world. It is an open ballot. It is going to be close. I think Morocco has the advantage. I think they will scrap this process and go back to the old process.

Like I said, if Morocco gets all of CAF, it's a solid base to work from and gets them half way there. But do you really think they'll get all of Africa? Doubt it. Remember CAF is not united and there's still lingering resentment from the last election. With the way we do politics, it may mean you don't give the other guy the win. You're also over politicizing the whole situation, not minding it's the football FAs that vote. South Africa backed Morocco and two weeks ago retracted back to neutral. We won't know the real votes until they're counted and published.

In Asia, Morocco will likely not get the Gulf countries, and most of East Asia and South Asia. They need to work on South East Asia and the north and will get Palestine, Yemen, Syria, Iran etc. Could throw N. Korea in there too. If by your calculation they get 11 of 55 from UEFA, that's 44 going to the America bid. 44 + 10 (CONMEBOL) + 30 (CONCACAF) + 11 (OCEANIA) is already 95. They'll need 9 from ASIA. 6 strong allies in the Gulf and South, geographical advantage in the East and they could pick up a couple CAF countries. Lets just say Morocco has to do way better than 11 in UEFA.

Morocco will get 56 CAF votes. All of Africa will support Morocco.

Morocco will get most of the Gulf countries. That muslim ban will influence the vote. I am actually surprised that Saudi Arabia will not support a fellow Sunni country. Will rather support a country that has a Muslim ban.

I can't see Venezuela or Bolivia voting for the US. You really think Maduro who controls everything in Venezuela will allow the Venezuela FA to vote for the US? Conembol will probably give the US 8 out of 10 votes. Could be 7.

Like you said we really don't know until after the vote. Morocco could get more than 11 votes from UEFA. Could get some of the Oceania votes. We don't know yet.

It's up to UEFA and non MENA - AFC I think Morocco has the edge (better timezone, less built up facilities etc).

Here's the breakdown for the WC in Brazil, the second most attended after the USA '94 WC. Surprised that many tickets were sold in Canada.

I'm willing to bet with you that CONEMBOL will vote 10 of 10 for the America bid. Even Maduro cannot go that far in subverting the wish of the people. I'm surprised you'd be surprised by the stand of the sheikhs in Saudi Arabia, the 52nd US state? They might even own the stadiums in the US with executive boxes permanently reserved. :taunt: I'd be more surprised if Morocco gets all of CAF.

Well it will be extremely dumb for CAF not to give 100 percent of their votes to Morocco. Because if they don't. Africa will never host another world cup. I hope the CAF president drive that message loud and clear to CAF members.

If the roles were reversed. An African country is up against a UEFA country. The Americans will not vote for the African country. They will also use the vote to divide CAF in future votes. Saying so and so country didn't support your bid in 2018. Africa is stronger as one powerful block. I will be disappointed if CAF don't deliver 56 votes to Morocco.

Morocco should also do well in AFC and UEFA. Venezuela is not voting for the US.

Venezuela is not going to vote for the US. You can forget about that. That country don't like the US. Bolivia also don't like the US.

Morocco must seal the deal with a good presentation.

Morocco is going to sweep Asia, especially the Muslim countries.

If Morocco can get votes from Dominica and St Lucia. Concacaf is split. Cuba and TNT will most likely vote for Morocco and will lobby other members to vote for Morocco.

South Africa don backtrack from their earlier support. The SAFA boss obviously supports Morocco. The sports Ministry doesn't support Morocco. Citing a diplomatic spat in 2004 and the 2010 world cup bid fraud allegation. Now they are saying their exco will make the final decision. Let me just say that if CAF doesn't give 100 percent support to Morocco. We will never host another world cup on African soil again. I don't want to hear countries like South Africa complain in the future about failing to win tournament hosting bids. Some African leaders are extremely daft.

Ohenhen, just saw this on BBC. Safe to say the UK ala home nations will be supporting the N. America bid. Money has started talking and this is from organizers.... Perhaps Morocco should start protesting....

World Cup 2026: US, Canada & Mexico bid 'would create £8bn profit for Fifa'

A joint bid by the US, Canada and Mexico to host the 2026 World Cup would make an $11bn (£8.1bn) profit for world governing body Fifa, the organisers say.

A North American World Cup is projected to create $14bn (£10.3bn) in revenue.

US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said it would be "the most successful World Cup ever".

Morocco have also bid to host the event and have received significant support in recent weeks.

The North African nation submitted a 193-page document to Fifa in March detailing the reasons why it should host the tournament.

The vote to award the 2026 event takes place on 13 June in Moscow.

US President Donald Trump previously said that it would be "a shame if countries we always support" lobbied against the US bid.

However, Cordeiro said on Tuesday he hoped Fifa members would set aside politics when they vote next month.

"The question of who will host in 2026 has at times become mixed with geopolitics," Cordeiro added.

"We are asking that we be judged, not on the politics of the moment, but on the merits of our bid."

The United States previously hosted the World Cup in 1994 and Mexico has hosted it twice, in 1970 and 1986.

Morocco can also earn money for FIFA. We don't need the US to make money.

It is only about money. It is also about fan experiences. Are they going to deny Iranian fans entry to watch the tournament?

Has there ever been a time when Africa was united on something? Aparthied? World Cup bidding? Communicable diseases? Our continent is too fractured.
