Rohr drops 5 players before Super Eagles fly out to England
By admin - May 25, 2018, 3:09 pm241 0

Coach Gernot Rohr has disclosed that five players will be dropped from the Super Eagles World Cup training camp before their warm-up match against England at Wembley on June 2.

The Franco-German coach told reporters at a press briefing in Uyo this afternoon that after the team’s friendly against DR Congo in Port Harcourt Monday, five players will be dropped.

There are presently 29 players in the camp in Uyo with Chelsea star Victor Moses to join the rest of the squad in London.

Rohr will then be expected to name his final 23-man squad for Russia 2018 at least a day before the FIFA deadline of June 4.

This will be before the team’s final test game against Czech Republic in Austria.

ohenhen, Nwankwo is going to the World Cup! Wait for the aftermath of the Congo match. Dude brings a dimension the team does not have and will be a nightmare for our opponents.

Lokosa might make the cut. Moreover, I don’t see 9 defenders making it to England :!:

Not necessarily. The fact that his team dropped to Serie B has demystified him :!:

Is he actually going to give those 5 players a chance to justify their inclusion in the match against Congo?

Any of these are droppable:

1. Akpeyi
2. Ezenwa
3. Uzoho
4. Ajiboye

5. Echiejile
6. Aina
7. Chidozie

8. Joel
9. Ogu
10. Eze
11. Agu

12. Simon

13. Ighalo
14. Iheanacho
15. Nwankwo
16. Lokosa

All goalies and all strikers in play. Suspect:
3 of 4 goalies will make it.
1 of Echiejile or Aina will make it.
1 of Ighalo or Nwankwo will make it.

Guys that will make it if at par with others are:
1. Ezenwa
2. Uzoho

3. Echiejile

4. Joel
5. Ogu

6. Ighalo
7. Iheanacho

He's already seeing them in training.

England have already named the 23 man squad + standby players. Many other nations have followed suit. I would be much more concerned if we were making wholesale changes 20 days before the tournament. This has been a 21-month cycle with Rohr able to evaluate most of the players at his disposal. You can see one or two players breaking in if they are in good form (maybe Nwankwo) or young players making a case for the first time, but generally the extra players in camp are just injury replacements if someone goes down in the friendlies/preparations. Not really the time for chopping and changing the squad.

The bolded players are already locked into the 23 unless we have injuries, imo.

I like this; that is, all the assumptions, guessings and perhaps permutations as to the players to be dropped. Come-on guys, keep guessing

I think it is reasonable to assume that most of the World Cup qualifiers participants are locked in. Players like Aina and Agu may lose out to newer players... and given the fact that we really don’t have a true substitute for Ighalo at CF, Lokosa might get the nod :!:

It’s silly season on CE. How can a grown man that’s been following SE for year with no known mental illness or curses claim that Iheanacho is “droppable “. Wow!

I could indulge your dumbness in your comment but I'll pass. The undroppable players can more or less skip camp yet still make it. Clearly Rohr resulted to trying different things in attack in the last two games against Poland and Serbia. We are heading to the WC with no prolific nor trustworthy striker. Strikers that just posted zero shots on goal in the last two friendlies. Ahmed Musa was given a run out in that position and while Ighalo tried to redeem himself against Serbia, Iheanacho was just awful. He just came off a mediocre season at Leceister, and there are elements in his game to count against him. Whether it's ball handling, in the air, beating his man, holding up the ball or wing forward play. His often repeated quality is finishing, but that's only good when in a team like Manchester City, which the SE are not.

He won't make the 23 of many teams at the WC, he's none of Aghahowa, Yakubu, Yekini, Ikpeba etc. Rohr's 30 man list clearly shows he's looking at options in the striking position. It's a wake up call when complete newbies are called up to your position on a 30 man roster this late hour. The only way Iheanacho is undroppable is if all 3 of Ighalo, Nwankwo and Lokosa don't show they're in better form. If at par with anyone of them, then his body of work will put him over the line. What happened against Poland and Serbia will be unacceptable for any team hoping to achieve something at a WC. Any coach that allows emotions to overrun that is not set for any tangible achievement.
