Positioning and Psychology

Post by donadoni »

As the mundial draws near I’ve been reflecting on a couple of things about our team.

We have quite a few players that “on their day” can be really good and impactful but are not consistent. This goes for their performances at both club and national level. Overall we have a good team, better preparation than usual, good balance and good morale. I expect a decent performance. But to have a great performance (which is definitely possible) we need all the players to be at their best.

Players like Musa, Ighalo, Moses Simon, Nacho, Iwobi, Etebo etc have shown the ability to be highly impactful in some games over the past few years and yet average in others. Even VicMo seems to have his on and off days.

Of course this applies to any football player, but it seems more pronounced for us. And I think there are two components - positioning and psychology (excluding players being unfit etc).

In terms of positioning - some players come to life when played in certain positions and fail to impress in others. Eg Nacho seems to struggle on the wings but is dangerous as a supporting striker. Etebo works hard in CM but sometimes we miss out on how dangerous he could be closer to goal. Musa doesn’t get to play central because others are ahead on the pecking order like Ighalo and so on.

And then in terms of psychology players like Iwobi, Musa, Ighalo, VicMo can get lost in themselves and need the right support to come into the game with the right mindset and maintain it.

It seems that one of keys to our success will be the extent to which Rohr can strike the perfect balance in terms of positioning and player psychology, game by game, to get all the players performing their best. If he can the sky is the limit. But that’s a big if.

Thoughts welcome!

The team is still growing and learning to play together. The SE will likely not start to show their true potentials until, the 3rd game. If they make it out of the group then watch out!
