I have watched many of the World Cup matches so far and clearly data has changed the role of the underdog. Many supposedly weaker teams are now competing with the stronger teams because they know a whole lot more about how they play.
For example, just look at how hard it was for Uruguay with top strikers like Cavani and Suarez to break down Egypt. Look at how hard it was for Argentina to break down little Iceland. Or what about Germany who couldnt get past the Mexican wall and not only that, but the Mexicans laid the sword to the slowness of the German midfield and defence to get back to launch numerous deadly counter-attacks.
This is no ordinary World Cup. Coaches, analysts are getting data live on who is playing where and playing what. The gaps between big teams and small teams is narrower than before.
World Class teams will have to start changing their patterns multiple times in a match to confuse the opponent. Star players will have to start going it alone. Otherwise the big teams might not make the knockout stages.

This is precisely why it is difficult to assume that the World Cup will be watered down with 48 teams. Further, as you watch these games, you just hope that the Rules Committee is thinking about ways to open it up. It was not exactly pretty watching Mexico and Iceland virtually create a wall in their games.
