Maybe becuase of the weather. Rainy season. We can't have them playing in the rain.

The weather isn’t a problem maybe we need to invest in floodlights and generators for evening kickoffs and a cooler climate.

5. Create two groups of 12 teams for the 2nd round. Pots created based on FIFA ranking and region. To make sure each Group have a balance. For example not too many North or West African sides in one pot over the next.
6. First 4 teams in each group get an automatic ticket to the world cup. The 5th place teams in each group will play a playoff to determine the 9th team to represent Africa.

7. The 24 teams that take part in WC qualifications, automatically qualify for AFCON.

The benefit is Africa will be better prepared if we play more games. Scrap AFCON qualifiers and the CHAN tournament.

That is about 24 games for Nigeria over a 4 year period. We would play about 6 to 8 World cup qualifiers a year.

FIFA International match calendar
September - 1 game and 1 friendly
October- 1 game and 1 friendly
November - 2 games
March- 2 games
early June- 3 games

It will force teams to build depth. Teams with different styles of play will play each other. We can have Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt in one group. Teams that never get to play Nigeria, will get a chance.

It sounds good if your Nigerian but you need to address a major concern that CAF has I. E. How do the eliminated teams including the first 8 eliminated teams stay busy? Remember, that was the reason for current format as well as for the CHAN. CAF also has a responsibility to develop those weaker teams.
Regional competitions and friendlies.

CAF should also give grants to every country to help with training, flight tickets and accommodation.

We need to negotiate a lucrative TV deal with the expanded WC qualification format.

It was a major mistake to move it in the first place. Africa should do what is best for Africa not Europe. June is raining season for most African countries. AFC hold their tournament in January. AFCON should be held once every 4 years, not 2 years.
Explain how playing a major tournament in February is better for African players when the best players in the continent don’t even stay in Africa because their leagues are not strong enough and are only professional by name?

Above average African weather in June!
That is the way we have been doing it for decades. AFrican players that are good still succeed in Europe.

Afcon will be held once every 4 years instead of 2.

We have to do what is best for Africa not Europe.

European countries do what is best for them. Why should Africans not do the same. You have various anti African policies like the EPL home grown policy and the strict requirements to get a work permit in the UK. You have various countries having quotas on the amont of foreign players they can sign.

Doing things for decades with no reward on the international level is a clear sign that a change is needed, playing a tournament the same year as the World Cup didn't do much as teams that qualified where better off playing friendlies against quality teams from other continents,Africa's best players where taken away from their clubs which made clubs think twice about signing them and as I've proved the weather was never a problem.African leagues are not up to standard even those North of the Sahara are below par despite more investment, our very own NFA don't own their own academy and no specific football only stadia with green and white seating with their crest on the front door so it's clear what ever money they make is not going towards bettering themselves,so how is being stubborn and doing what they've done for decades isn't going improve anything despite ample oppotunities to do better?

You think moving the Afcon to June and not in the same year as the world cup will actually improve things?
It will improve things for Europeans maybe. Africans that are good still got into the best clubs when the Afcon was held in February.
This world cup is the worst performance for Africa since the 80's. The first time in decades we didn't have Afcon in the same year as the World cup.

Nigeria won the first African Nations Cup in the modern era that wasn't in a World Cup year then qualified out of a World Cup group the following year and so did Algeria (qualify out of a group) so why complain about changing the tournament to June when we are yet to see the impact?Until Africans have decent leagues in each region there's no point in complaining about something we simply don't invest in like I've said the NFA have never invested in their own academy or own a football specific stadium you don't get something for nothing it's more than luck nothing is a given in this world so you must try hard to take it and organisation in Africa isn't geared towards success at the moment, let's revisit your claim after the next two AFCONS.

I'd like to see Africa adopt a qualification process like South America's.

The best representatives will rise to the top this way and it puts an end to qualifying groups like the one Nigeria found itself in with three recent champions of ANC whilst other teams like Ghana have easier paths (and still fail to qualify).

Dude, you'd have qualifiers to eliminate teams before the league format.

As I mentioned earlier it sounds good but it would not be simple to compare it to CONMEBOL and Bigpokey's point is very important. CAF will have a problem - what happens to teams eliminated? Do they just stay home? Remember CAF has a responsibility for all teams. In South America all teams are involved. The challenge is how does CAF create important activity for eliminated teams? That cannot be ignored.

It is doable but your thinking must address this in order to be viable. Thus, it is more complex than simply adopting the CONMEBOL format because the context is different. See Ohenhen1's response earlier -- he makes an attempt to address this important aspect. However, how will the regional competitions operate?

Top 24 go to Afcon.

Eliminated teams will still be busy with regional tournaments, friendlies and even CHAN for them.

The current system is not preparing the teams well enough for the World cup. You have weak groups that allow weak teams to go to the world cup. You then have groups like Nigeria group that leads to the elimination of teams like Cameroon.

Ohenhen1,

If the plan is to avoid eliminating teams like Cameroon, then you will have a problem because as long as Africa will have 8 or so teams there will be a good team that will still not make it. In essence, it will be like the CONMEBOL where good teams will also fail just as Chile did in 2018 despite winning the Copa just the previous year. Those kinds of elimination will to be prevented by this new format.

For me, the gains of the format is that it provides more rigor and ensures that the top teams, at the time of the qualifiers, make it through via the methods in play.

Weather is. It is raining in most part of West, Central and East Africa. You have rains also in some part of South Africa! Only North Africa will be able to host tournaments of such magnitude successfully during that period.
