World Cup a couple of years too early for Nigeria's golden generation?

TAIWO AWONIYI

Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester City, Barcelona and Inter Milan are likely to miss out on 20-year-old Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi, who is set to sign a new deal with Liverpool which could lead to a loan move to Monaco. (Teamtalk)

Super Eagles World Cup 2018 squad member Chidozie Awaziem has returned back to his parent club FC Porto ‎after a highly successful time on loan in France with Ligue 1 side Nantes.

(...) After his involvement with Nigeria at the World Cup Awaziem returned to Portugal over the weekend and will today join the rest of the team in pre season training, where former Nigeria U17 and U20 ace Musa Yahaya is already training.

According to Aksam, talks with Leicester City are ongoing but the English club are in no rush to sell the player after his good performances in the World Cup.

SAMUEL CHUKWEUZE

Quote:
Chukwueze took the third division play-offs by storm with a superb showing for the B team of Villarreal and he has been rewarded with a spot in the first team as well as a new contract at the club.

Van Hooijdonk admits there’s still plenty for the youngster to improve on but is convinced that he’ll cause Scottish Premiership defences all sorts of problems if Gers can seal the deal.

He told MailSport: “Some of the things Sadiq will do on the pitch, you won’t believe. He can produce pieces of magic.

HENRY ONYEKURU

Quote:
The winger made the move to Goodison Park from KAS Eupen last summer, but was instantly loaned out to Anderlecht for the entire 2017/18 campaign as he was not able to get a work permit to play in the Premier League.

And those issues are still around today after Galatasaray boss Fatih Terim confirmed his move to Turkey.

That's 1 right back, 1 midfielder, 2 wingers, 2 strikers and Ahmed Musa, with only Ahmed Musa featuring for Nigeria this summer.

This, for now, is still all about 'potential'.
They need to step up to international class, if not world class

I think we are all agreed now that to perform credibly at the world cup, Nigeria needs a few players operating at the very top levels.
That has made the subtle difference between a semi-final berth and a first-round exit.

Nigeria will always have the baseline talents but its more of how can we get them playing in the cream European countries and the talents are spread evenly across all departments on the field - no good having 8 promising forwards like now. nothing promising in the defense and goal keeping departments

Awaziem is defence, Yahaya has been moved to right back and in Alampasu, Uzoho and Okoye we have three talented GKs. There is also Stephen Eze.

So it's not all up front.

Have you got any credible reports on Yahaya becos I'd presumed his very promising football career was virtually over since he seemed to have disappeared off the radar.
Is he still progressing?
Same with Chiderah Ezeh from the same set.

Alampasu and Okoye - the minimum standard should be them playing 1st team football in any creditable European top division league NOT 4th division or reserve. hopefully Uzoho will get a move now

Simply put, we'll be grooming another young team in 2022 for 2026

Yahaya is not in the same boat as Ezeh, who is nowhere to be seen.
Yahaya has almost 3000 minutes of football for Porto B (in the Portuguese second division), where he has become one of the first on the team sheet.
He is also training with the Porto first team in pre-season.

Compare that to Ezeh and 300 minutes of football, zero goals...

Yahaya thankfully has rebounded, but he's another of those hurt by choosing England, instead of a more low key French, Spanish, Italian or even Dutch / Belgian club.

Yahaya's goals:

This one is reminiscent of one legendary Okocha goal, wins the ball in his own half, runs the entire field, wins the ball again in the opponents half, then dribbles past 4 players and scores a cheeky goal - starts at 1:40:

3000 minutes ...thats the equivalent of about 33 games in a season
Not bad at all.
Thanks for the info.
Glad to hear he is playing consistently....and obviously doing well. :thumb:
