Opals again, River Plate and Santos are big clubs in South America and are the equivalent of the likes of Benfica, Lokomotiv Moscow etc.
Martin's started his career with the primavera team of Inter Milan, so it's logical that he started his career with them.
Mikel was the 2nd best player after Messi in the 2005 U20 WC, so he had a stage to attract the big clubs.

Mikel played in Norway.

As pointed out, Mikel's big stage was the u20 wc. Even before then his qualities preceded him. He was already a talent people were talking about and wanted to see the hype.
Norway did not make Mikel. He wasn't even there long.

They are often told what to say before the interviews...that is why all of them appear to say the same thing. The club do have media officers and one of the things they do with young players like this especially coming into a new club is to brief them what the interview would look like and how they are to answer. They are encouraged not to say too much be not to answer questions they are not comfortable with.

Not necessarily, I just think a permanent move is always in their best interest. It takes players time to settle down in a new environment , some of them a whole season. Self defeatist logic. So the federal and state governments should stop awarding scholarships to students because every t, d & h wants one. There are criteria for doing anything that needs to be done in the National Interest. There are certain players with unquestionable potential who we know will become invaluable to us if they continue to develop positively. No stone should be left unturned to help them reach their potential. So, players like that, Onyekuru and Nwakali come to mind, who require assistance to play in the must competitive leagues ought to get it

As for Gerrard, all the early signs suggest he's going to struggle, were carved apart at will yesterday, how they emerged victorious is a mystery.

@SLK, Gerrard is amassing recruits at a phenomenal rate, with barely enough time to know his best 11. Expect nothing innovative at Ibrox, just much of the same, with a bit more animation from the touchline. Anything less than second and sustained challenge for first, will be seen as a failure. Gerrard has a huge task on his hands.

I am not sure that those "big" clubs have a list of clubs from which they recruit. However, I agree that they are likely to sign a player outright to their main squad when a player performs consistently at the ECL for example or WC. Recently, Bayern signed a 17-year old Ghanaian/Canadian from the MLS but I believe they will send him on loan but a kid like that they will sign even from Amker if they feel there is huge potential. This is research data from the CIES Observatory. Note that only Spain, France, The Netherlands, and Germany did better than Ghana. Note the following according to the researchers: ""This reveals the top-level quality of the training programs developed in these countries.." This does not even account for the talented African players who move to lower division just for economic reasons. Those are missing from the data. Meanwhile, our guys rubbish football as played in Africa. IMHO, it is time that some of the narratives about our football begin to change and match realities on the ground.

I think he was initially credited with the goal (from the reports that I saw) but now being recorded as an own goal. I have just viewed the match highlights and it was indeed an own goal. Both Sadiq and his marker went for the ball and the poor Wigan defender nodded into his own net.
