I am watching beinsports from Canada on my cable.

First half is over. Bordeaux being outplayed and down 1-0 to Toulouse.

One thing I notice about Kalu is that he is very good at crossing the ball. He took one of the freekicks from far out where he whipped in a cross. From open play he put in one delicious cross in the air. He also crossed the ball into the box which should have resulted in a goal. He seems to have an eye for that kind of ball into the box. Other than that he hasn't done much but his team hasn't played well overall.

nice move by Kalu near the finish he skillfully beats his man and then puts in a nice cutback into the box.

and as I type more skillfull play in the box. Good first game for his new club. With Moses gone and Simon injured he should definately be called up for the next match.

Kalu and Onyekuru should both be called along with Success IMO.

He was the highest rated player on whoscored.com for his team, with 3 dribbles. This in his first match. Good start.

It doesn't look like Onyekuru is doing well with the Turkey team. I hope the boy is what we think he is . All the adulations heap on him is enormous for him to disappoint .

SCOUTING REPORT: HOW DID KALU FARE ON HIS BORDEAUX DEBUT?
By Clement Nwankpa Jr
http://naijasportsgrill.com.ng/2018/08/ ... aux-debut/

Samuel Kalu made his much-anticipated Girondins Bordeaux debut in the 1-2 loss to Toulouse on matchday two of the French Ligue one on Sunday.

Having arrived from KAA Gent as a replacement for Malcom who had departed for Barcelona, a lot is expected of him. Malcom was Bordeaux’s main man last season and whoever came in for him was expected to have a similar impact.

Kalu came highly-rated after scintillating performances for Gent in the Belgian Jupiler last season and was handed the number 10 jersey.

Bordeaux lost 0-2 at home to Strasbourg while Toulouse lost 0-3 to Marseille on matchday one so the match meant so much for both teams.

Leya Iseka gave Toulouse the lead in the 44th minute while Francois Kamano curled in Bordeaux’s equalizer in the 51st minute before Mathieu Dossevi scored the winner in the 67th minute.

All eyes were on Bordeaux’s number 10 as life without Malcom began, so how did Kalu fare during the 90 minutes he was on?

He filed out on the right side of the attack with Kamano on the opposite flank. Usually, while Kalu likes playing from the right, he also fancies switching flanks intermittently but till the last five minutes of the game, he was stuck on the right with Kamano attempting to cut in from the left and strike or coming in to meet Kalu’s deliveries.

Most times when Kalu went past his marker down the right, the advancing Kamano from the left was the target of his crosses. It is quite a huge prospect having him and Kamano on both flanks all season.

It was also obvious that he was stationed down the right to assist right back Sergi Palencia in the defensive duties of checkmating Toulouse skipper Max Gradel so he was not just useful in the final third but more often, he fell back to make timely interventions.

Generally, this would be deemed an impressive debut as he gave glimpses of what should be expected when he fully settles in.

Positives

Kalu is an all-action player with a bundle of energy needed in both defensive and offensive situations. His knack to take on oppositions in those one-against-three situations is a quality many coaches would tap into.

Most times, he comes out of those situations leaving the opposition trailing or winning a foul and there were many of such moments in this game where he proved a handful for Toulouse defenders winning free-kicks in vital areas.

Kamano was saddled with posing the direct threat from the other flank but Kalu had the task of causing more havoc from deeper positons and teeing up Kamano.

At some point in the second half, instead of running to the corner flag, he drifted into more central positions, freed up space for Palencia to burst wide, then released the right back afterwards with telling passes. The problem was that most of Palencia’s crosses didn’t get to the targets in the box.

The coach must have noted his multi-purpose value. His defensive as well as offensive abilities mean he can help the team when they press high up.

Negatives

Kalu’s major weakness has been his deliveries. For all his industry, he lacks complimentary final touches. So he does all the hard work, gets past his markers, finds himself in a promising position to tee-up a team-mate but doesn’t locate his target with his cross.

There were many such moments in this game. This was a key snag in his Gent days and he has carried it over to Bordeaux. To make a success of his career not just at Bordeaux, the accuracy rate of his final touches has to increase.

Then there is this burden of being Malcom’s replacement. He is condemned to live up to the hype and if he makes a success of it, his next move could be akin to Malcom heading to Nou Camp.

But that was also a major draw-back in this game. Malcom was a tormentor-in-chief in the opposition’s half, he virtually lived there. Kalu isn’t entirely a Malcom as he is stronger and equally useful in defensive situations.

He fell back more often and, at some point, drifted away and became anonymous. He needs to be more forceful in the final third to live up to the expectations.

Kalu’s key moments in the game

1’ He started the game from right side of the midfield, Kamano on the left.

10’ Back in Bordeaux’s half for defensive duties, makes a hasty clearance that launches a Bordeaux attack.

13’ Turns away from the right flank, cuts in and hits a left foot belter from edge of the box, parried away by keeper Baptiste Reynet.

18’ He is back again to intercept a Toulouse attack.

21’ He tracks back and intercepts Toulouse captain Max Gradel’s promising foray.

30’ He tries to tee-up Younousse Sankhare in the Toulouse box but the pass is cut off by Toulouse defense. Timely intervention.

36’ He gets to the by-line and delivers an exquisite cross, nodded wide by Kamano.

37’ He pings a 30-yard pass over Toulouse defense the way of Sankhare…off side.

40’ He delivers a free-kick into Toulouse box, nodded away by Toulouse defender, Christopher Jullien.

45’ He squares the ball to Kamano, whose volley is saved by Reynet.

46’ He is fouled by Toulouse left back Francois Moubandje and wins a free-kick in a promising position. Kamano bends it narrowly over the bar.

48’ He is proving too much for Moubandje. This time, he cuts in and is set to pull the trigger but Moubandje bundles him down. The Toulouse number 29 bags a yellow card for his troubles and gives away a free-kick in the same position as the last.

49’ He takes the free-kick but straight at the wall

53’ He initiates attack once more. This time from a central position, then sends a long-range pass to the overlapping right back, Palencia. Palencia’s cross is thwarted.

56’ He turns inside and blitzes his way through Toulouse midfield but is fouled by Gradel.

58’ A tactical switch means he is now cutting deeper into central midfield from the right to free-up space for the advancing right back.

66’ He is back in right back position to stop Moubandje but he comes worse off, caught by Moubandje’s high boots.

83’ turns away in the middle of the park, a killer pass should free the teammate in the box, but the pass is intercepted

87’ Again, he turns away but his delivery is woeful, straight into the keeper’s hands.

90’ He pops up on the left, drives into the box, cuts back for teammate who gets set to pounce but keeper thwarts.

90+2 He turns away from a sea of Toulouse legs down the left, zooms into the box but his left-footed effort is way off target. He is making desperate attempts to carve out a late equalizer for Bordeaux and taking it personally, but too late.

Do you realize Moses has retired.

Simon is injured.

Ebuehi is injured.

Musa is no longer a winger.

Iwobi best position is AM.

So who are our wide players ?

Time to try these prospects.

Success, Onyekuru, Kalu.

Also keep in mind

Eduok, Imoh, Olayinka, Chukwuze, Danjuma, Bonaventure

TTTK,

Clement Nwankpa is a sports journalist of good repute. He watched the game live on tv and apparently took the time to watch it more closely with notes which Vancity has not provided. I am more inclined to believe him because of his compelling details rather than believe a sweeping statement by Vancity that lacks any detail. That is my tuppence.
