Why I believe in Simy Nwankwo - Rohr

https://odili.net/news/source/2018/aug/28/821.html

Festus Abu

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has decided to overhaul his team's style of play and believes Simeon Nwankwo can add a new dimension to the Super Eagles' attacking play.

The former Portugal-based attacker popularly called Simy became a fans favourite after his lung-bursting efforts resulted in scoring vital goals when his Italian side Crotone were battling to escape relegation last season. Unfortunately the Sharks placed 18th in the Serie A table and dropped to Serie B.

The 6 ft 6in forward was restricted to cameo appearances at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and could not showcase his talent to the world.

Having learned some harsh lessons at the World Cup, coupled with Victor Moses' retirement from international football, Rohr now says he wants Simy to spearhead his attack

Speaking with reporters in Lagos on Friday, the veteran German manager said he decided to name the gangly player in his 24-man squad for the September 7 Cameroon 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles in Victoria despite plying his trade in the lower division because he believes in him.

He is banking on the former Gil Vicente star's technical ability, strength, size and aerial threat to count during the AFCON qualifiers. Nigeria lost their first game 2-0 to South Africa in Uyo last year, and Rohr is looking to beat minnows Seychelles to keep qualification hopes alive.

"We saw many teams at the World Cup with big and tall strikers," the 65-year-old said.

"Simy can do that, hence I invited him (for the match against Seychelles)."

Rohr said the 26-year-old decided to stay at Crotone to help them gain promotion back to the Serie A because the Pythagoreans wanted a big transfer fee from the clubs who wanted him. Reports claimed Crotone slapped €15m price tag on the head of their prized player.

"He has to stay at Crotone for the moment," Rohr said.

Meanwhile, the former Bordeaux manager said he would rely on Carl Ikeme to help him search for new keepers.

The former Eagles' first choice keeper was forced to retire from football after he was diagnosed with acute leukaemia a year ago.

And Rohr, who has added the 32-year-old former Wolverhampton custodian to his coaching staff, says he will assist him in the goalkeeping department.
Remember the three Rs: Respect for your self; Respect for others; Responsibility for all your actions.

Sooo... what happened at the World Cup? Belief was suspended? If he has decided to change his style and make Simi the focus, why invite Ighalo? This has to be JJ.
We have been brainwashed by the Premier League that it's the best in the world. Nonsense. It's the best brand

He says that we are currently "brainwashed" into believing that the Premier League is the best competition in the world, and that we are now a long way off dominating the Champions League again.

I think Spain’s by far the best league.

How does what he is saying rule out Ighalo? If anything & given simmy’s weightlessness he needs a strong partner like Ighalo to win, hold up ball and chip over to him to finish especially if Ighalo has problem finishing
make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable.

Why are many people second-guessing what our coach is doing, or about to do? Damn!

The feckless man is absolutely confused. He wants to play Simi he invited Ighalo,Kelechi, and Musa.. Honest SE fans should be ready for another rough ride and stupid flimsy reasons that follows the turbulent ride.

The thing I worry about with Simy is that he has not played consistently in top flight football anywhere and that he has been relegated twice, in both Portugal and Italy. We really need to find a better quality consistent goal scorer in our ranks.

The truth is when Keshi introduced new players just before the WC, Keshi was called names. When Rohr does it, the press is silent.

Ighlao is neither big nor tall. Ighalo was our spearhead and the person who Simi was in contention with at the world cup. What "harsh lessons" did he learn?

I highly doubt you will see Rohr starting Simi and Ighalo at the same time.

Chief, if Rohr truly said this, then he's a classic job-man. How could he take Simy to the World Cup and play him for a grand total of six minutes when we had a glaring scoring problem. After the World Cup (where he went to learn) he now invites the non-scoring Ighalo, the disappointing Iheanacho, World Cup hero Musa(who he did not start at the beginning) and the same Simy who he had in pre-World Cup camp. I hope he turns all his antecedents on the head and starts Simy against Seychelles, otherwise, we'll await the result.

 I've read all the comments. Rohr intends to use Simi like a Knockdown specialist for Ighalo to be the fox in the box and score. Route one upgrade!!!!
