Re: Comparison of average wages in different football league
This partly explains why a lot of our 'top' footballers retire early.
While someone like Mikel would definitely have been able to get a contract in a decent league, stepping down from Chelsea was always going to be hard to match that pay check.
Instead they opt for the crazy leagues (China, Qatar, KSA etc.) Leagues that pay their top foreign imports disproportionately, relative to the average wages in the league.
They are looking at it the wrong way! Players in the EPL are overpaid! Getting a good contract in a Mid-table Serie A team is much better than going to Qatar or China. The EPL confuses these players.

Buhari, whose two terms thankfully ground to a constitutional halt in May. (One thing both democracies have going for them is that their leaders, however bad, have only two terms to swing the wrecking ball.) Under Buhari, growth per head also plunged to 0. An economic agenda drawn from the dusty pages of a 1970s protectionist handbook failed to do the trick. Despite Buhari’s promise to tame terrorism and criminality, violence flourished. Despite his reputation for probity, corruption swirled. FT

The EPL is NOT the best league in the world.
but look at the massive difference in wages. The EPL is the best marketed, has the best commercial deals, has the best overall financial structure. When some of our player are on their way down the EPL pecking order, rather than cast their net wide, and look at offers from all reasonable leagues, they call it a day and look for a retirement league that can either match their pay or beat it.

Is Nigeria listed at no 34 or is it lower? The Daily Mail logo is obscuring the number.
The gap in pay between nos 33 and 34 is huge, suggesting there are other leagues in between.
And where is the Chinese league in all this?

Chinese Super League is 15th. Average wages are not higher than in the top European leagues. What is higher, is how much they pay for players on the downward spiral. They pay "low" on average, but exorbitant amounts for the marquee players.
A player might be able to negotiate 40K pounds in the EPL or 20K pounds in some of the other Euro leagues, but because he is somewhat of a marketable quantity, the Chinese offer him 90K pounds a week!
That same player sees a drop in his quality, while lying to everyone including himself, that his football has not suffered.

Re: Comparison of average wages in different football league
Again, best league is subjective and a matter of choice. Well marketed or not if people don't derive any enjoyment from it then it won't last. The players are well paid because they make the league what it isTbite wrote:The EPL is NOT the best league in the world.

Again, the best point is subjective and a matter of choice. Thanks for the cop-out, I will use it to great effect.pajimoh wrote:Again, best league is subjective and a matter of choice. I mean, we could use metrics....but hey screw metrics.

T, my friend, are you a comedian? You gave your opinion as to the best or not the best league in the world and I gave mine.Tbite wrote:Again, the best point is subjective and a matter of choice. What has metrics got to do with this? There are those who enjoy watching their team even though they have no hope of winning anything.
People enjoy EPL for their reasons and are willing to pay subscription or entrance fee for communal viewing. Even when it's getting more expensive. Don't just put it down to the best marketed. Too simplistic in my view

...Nigerian league at 130 pounds/week. Well not bad for a sansix holder, that's approximately 50, 60 grand, not bad at all.
