Lobi and Rangers advance on the Continent

Lobi won 2-0 in the return leg in Enugu to advance 2-1 on aggregate in the CAF Champions league.

Sikiru Alimi scored the 1st in the 14th minute and Yaya Kone converted a penalty in the 69th minute to score the 2nd.

Rangers got an impressive 3-1 away win vs. Defence in Ethiopia to advance with a 5-1 aggregate margin in the CAF Confederations Cup.

I believe each team needs to win in the next round to get to the League stage of each tourney. That would be an outstanding success, if it happens, considering the shortened and sabotaged 2018 NPFL season.

Lobi will face Gor Mahia of Kenya, while Rangers will be up against an Algerian team, USM Bel Abbes.

First round then group stages.

Lobi Stars got a good draw. Could have been Al Ahly or Ismaila or Casablanca and etc.

Got lucky to get the team from Kenya.

The highlighted is true for Lobi Stars in the ACL but not true for Rangers. There is a further round of play in the Confed Cup to get to the league stage. This occurs because the third stage involves winners of the Confed Cup second stage playing against losers of the ACL second stage to determine teams that get to the Confed Cup league stage.

Gor Mahia is a pretty decent team (probably the Real Madrid of Kenya  )...
Kenya is one of those African countries where the best players are concentrated in 1 or 2 clubs (Leopards being the other).

Yup, Gor Mahia is pretty much their national team.

"Gor Mahia." I will never forget the name. According to Earnest Okonkwo, "Bendel Insurance beat Gor Mahia and everybody." That was in the return leg of the CAF Championship after Gor Mahia had beaten Bendel Insurance (BI) 1-0 in Nigeria. At the time, BI were considered "away specialists" among all Nigerian teams.

Anyway, very good results for us. I hope our teams will keep winning.

Bendel with Sam Okpodu on the wings came up against Gor Mahia who had reached the final of the Africa cup in the previous year. The visitors won the first leg which was played in Benin city. The score was 2-1.

Great! I stand corrected regarding the score in the first leg game. However, in the second leg, Bendel Insurance (BI) won by three goals to two (3-2).

The BI team had, in addition to Sam Okpodu, Henry Ogboe on the wings. They were fast and deadly.

Meanwhile Gor Mahia beat Lobi 3-1 yesterday in Nairobi...
That away goal could be crucial for Lobi though in the return leg in Enugu.

They need to find a way to turn it around, as we cannot deal with another East African loudmouth on here (for the next few months till Kenya and Uganda go 3 & out during AFCON).

Rangers in a good spot with the away draw, but the mindset must be to score at least 2 unreplied goals at home (and early too).

I feel that both Rangers and Lobi will go through. The only downside for me ids that fans do not show up to cheer these teams and that will encourage the visitors.

If Alimi scored in the 1st and 14th minutes and Kone scored in the 69th, that is THREE goals. How can they have won 2-0 if there were 3 goalscorers?

NOT ‘scored in the 1st minute’ but rather “scored the 1st” goal...
